Stoppage Drill Posted 26 January , 2017 Share Posted 26 January , 2017 A few days ago I started a thread in the Cemeteries and Memorials Forum about Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor VC, DSO, MC*, DFC. As happens, the discussion has widened and wandered, which I, for one, always appreciate. Anyway, I noted a grave in the cemetery of a lady of the original WRAF who died on 24 December 1918. Her name was Janet Anderson-Hastie. Her rank was given as "Member". A number was also inscribed on the headstone, viz. 11500. I haven't heard of the rank/ status "Member." Anybody like to illuminate my ignorance ?
Moonraker Posted 26 January , 2017 Share Posted 26 January , 2017 RAF Museum webpage "The minimum age for joining the WRAF was 18 and the selection process complex. Stringent health checks often excluded many poor candidates from polluted cities. Those from educated, upper class families were enrolled as officers, whilst the majority were known as 'Members' and became the backbone of the service." Always a delight to shed light, even if it is only moonlight . Moonraker
