17403 L/Cpl John Cronin enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 28 April 1908.  At the outbreak of WW1 he was serving as a surveyor in West Africa.  He entered the war on 19 September 1914 attached to the Nigerian Regiment; he held the temporary rank of Sergeant.  Whilst serving with the Nigerian Regiment John became ill with Tuberculosis and returned to England.  He was discharged on 27 April 1915 judged physically unfit for war service.  John Cronin died at Peamount Sanatorium, Newcastle, Co Dublin on 4 September 1916.

In a change from previous policy, the CWGC have accepted George's actual grave as the place of commemoration, rather than add him to the Screen Wall. His original headstone survives in the "conservation area" in the NW corner of the cemetery.

I personally have always disliked the use of screen walls where a known grave exists. Can understand it where in the case of a common grave where there are multiple burials of unrelated persons.

Chris,

That's what makes it different from their previous approach. This is a common grave, accomodating another ten, unrelated, civilian burials from September and October 1920.

As far as I am aware, despite there being over 200 WW1 graves in the two plots in this corner of the cemetery, CWGC has never commemorated them in-situ, including the 35-40 that originally had privately erected headstones.

Pardon my ignorance in all this but could you explain what you mean by "screen walls"?  The reason I ask is that I am aware of a soldier who is commemorated at Thiepval.  However, he has a grave in England (he died after getting back to the UK).  He was accidentally shot when in the trenches, dying in July 1916.

What I am interested to know is that, if I were to persuade the CWGC that he did have a grave in the UK (the plot contains other members of his family and there is no CWGC commemoration) what, if anything would happen?  Specifically, would his name be removed from Thiepval and would the CWGC do anything in the UK?  I would not like the final position to be where he is not commemorated either in France or the UK.

Thanks in advance.

who is the soldier is question.

If you have details of the Grave and if he died in service, a copy of the death certificate.

Then the cwgc would place a headstone if possible on the actual grave or nearby at least

Thanks for the fast reply.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to my papers which contain all his details and won't be able to access them for a while.  he was actually a soldier that my wife was researching.  I will get back to you as soon as I can but it will be a little while.  We don't have a copy of his death certificate.  However, his papers contain several references associated with his death ... notes from medical officers, letters asking for the forwarding of effects, details for his death plaque, funeral arrangements etc.  He died in a military hospital around 3 months or so after his wounding.

I will be in touch.

Regards.

Hello Reg

Have already dealt with several cases where the casualty was listed on memorials to the missing abroad actually died in the UK & is buried here. It is a relatively simple process  as long as we have the evidence.

What happens with regard to the grave depends on the burial authority. In my experience the following could happen

a. If the grave has a private memorial which is in good order then this would be regarded as a fitting memorial. If not CWGC would ask permission to erect one of their headstones on the grave.

b. If the grave has no headstone then CWGC would ask permission to erect one of their headstones.

c. If the grave is a common grave then CWGC would either erect a special memorial in the cemetery or add the name to a screen wall commemoration if one exists. A special memorial for intents & purposes is a CWGC headstone, but will bear the words "Known to be buried in this cemetery".

https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/42100/greenwich-cemetery/ if you follow this link the photo on the page shows an example of a screen wall commemoration.

With regard to the memorial to the missing aboard the casualty's name would be moved from there to the new place of commemoration on the CWGC database. However physically the name would remain on the memorial until the panel was replaced.

No commemoration would ever disappear due to the process.

Just let me know what you want to do when you are ready.

Cheers

Chris

I think this has probably happened simply because there is a headstone on the grave.

A screen wall commemoration exists where the burial authority refuses to allow the erection of a headstone on a grave due to their policies with regard to common graves. By this I mean unpurchased graves.
