Hi all

All I have is from Find My Past

Great response

although I'm not paid up on Ancestry.

There were a lot of John Wards!

I think because I was looking for John on CWGC rather than J. I didn't get him

many thanks

Jon

I see from the Effects Register that he was accidentally killed on 21.5.1918. The 1/4 War Diary seems to have closed off at the end of Jan 1918 with the info that it was to be split into roughly 3 sections and drafted to 2/4,1/5 and 2/5 Battalions, so I was unable directly to find a Diary to explain any accidents, though I see that he is buried in Sangatte a Base Hospital area at Calais, which indicates that he went there in a wounded state, died and was buried there.

The effects records show that his father was the sole legatee - this means that he left a will - https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Wills?Surname=WARD&SurnameGrants=WARD&FirstName=john&FirstNameGrants=john&YearOfDeath=1918&YearOfDeathGrants=1918&AdvancedSearch=True&IsGrantSearch=False&IsCalendarSearch=False#soldiers

The information in the will can be mixed - it can be anything from one page to half a dozen. There's no way of finding out in advance of ordering.

Charles Henry Ward had an interesting fate

He was the victim of a submarine attack on the Transport "Mercian" (see  CWGC website)

Originally buried in Oran (Tamashouet) Cemetery his body re interred in  Le Petit Lac Cemetery in 1959
