8th Bn Seaforths War Diaries

Whilst trying to find out more about a great great Uncle, I cam across some of the 8ths war diaries,

Please take a look at this post about some of the War Diaries of the 8th Seaforths.

I would like to know more about some of the places mentioned:

IE. Tank Trench, MARLIERE CAVE, LA BERGERE – MARLIERE Road.

Where are these places? Ive tried to find them, i can't. Tried to find Tank Trench on a trench map, can't.

I get an idea of where this action took place (IE around Guemappe, but would like to try and get a better idea if possible.

Anyone here help out? I would be very grateful if there are more 8th Seaforth Diaries available online also.

Many thanks

Hi RFC01

Tank Trench was roughly on the line of the D33 west of Guemappe. The la Bergere - Marliere Road is the D33 (Monchy-le-Preux- Wancourt) and ran from the crossroads of the D33-D939 (Arras-Cambrai Road) at la Bergere, south of Monchy-le-Preux to la Marliere, north of Wancourt.

Tank Cemetery, named after Tank Trench, is about 700 metres north-west of Guemappe village near the west side of the D33, Monchy-le-Preux to Wancourt road. Row F, against the wall of the cemetery is a mass grave in which 64 men of the 7th Cameron Highlanders are buried with touching side-by-side headstones.

Hi Dilham,

Thanks very much for that information. Is there a trench map that exists of the area as it was at the time of the excert of the war diaries that are written? http://wishart1418.org/8th-battn-seaforth-highlanders-war-diary-april-1917/

Actually i found this was very helpful for Trench Maps, and could see Marliere on it:

Do you know anything of MARLIERE CAVE?

I did find this which was interesting:

https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/interactive/arras-tunnels-map

Ive just started reading about Arras, so should it now be obvious that this actually was a cave that would have been part of the vast tunnel/cave system under Arras? I guess I'm trying to find out if Marliere Cave still exists:)
