Gardenerbill Posted 7 December , 2016 Share Posted 7 December , 2016 A Subaltern in Serbia by Captain A. Donovan-Young A Subaltern in Serbia although well written and an easy read is really only of interest to the aficionado of the Salonika Campaign and in particular the exploits of the 10th Irish Division. The book is divided into two parts. The first part tells the story of the move up country into the front line in the winter of 1915, the battle of Kosturino and the retreat to Salonika. The second part takes the form of a series of letters to a friend covering the 10th Irish Division’s move to the Struma valley and the exploits of the 7th Royal Munster Fusiliers in and out of the line, on patrol and outpost duty in the villages of the plain. The actions at the villages of Karajakoi , Yenikoi and Bairakli are covered and there is an interesting chapter all about the character of the Bulgarian soldiers. The book is available in a paperback reprint for a modest price from forgotten books classic reprints at: Classic reprints
