Sgt York Posted 18 May , 2003 Share Posted 18 May , 2003 On periodic trips I make to Glasgow, through sparsely populated Argyll – I pass seven war memorials on route. On the last trip I made, I decided to clock the distance from the 1st memorial to the last, the distance being 60 miles. That averages out at roughly 8.5 miles per memorial. It brings it home to one how much The Great War affected this land of ours - down to the villages and hamlets with a few names on the memorials (still far too many). The War Memorials I pass: Tarbert, Adrishaig, Lochgilphead, Cairndow, Inverary, Furnace and Arrochar. All the memorials are unique in their design and remembrance. Ronnie. Simon_Fielding Posted 21 May , 2003 Share Posted 21 May , 2003 Niall Ferguson has some moving passages in his book 'The Pity of War' where he describes his grandfather's war service - also how Scotland suffered terribly in proportion to its size....I'll look up the facts and figures... brownag Posted 21 May , 2003 Share Posted 21 May , 2003 Ronnie Many thanks. I visted Tarbert a few years ago and thought the position of the memorial overlooking the town and the loch was quite something. It would take some beating to find a better place for a memorial.
