819 MT Coy ASC

I'm researching two brothers (cousins of my paternal grandfather) who both served in the 819 Mechanical Transport Company, ASC in the Salonika theatre. The brothers were:

Pte. Matthew Charles Louis Holme (called up 14.08.16 SN M2/202012) who served as a Ford car driver and a canteen manager

Pte. Charles Gustav Louis Holme (called up 01.01.17 SN M/281294)

Some time ago, I read that the company had been deployed to a supply column for the Serbian Army on 27.07.17. It serves me right for not making more careful notes, but I have at least just found the war diary at the NA Supply Column Serbian Army (819 Company ASC)

I would be grateful for any help in progressing my research.

Phil,

No, it wasn't actually. I thought it was the 'Long, Long Trail' site, but the company is no longer listed on the site. Somewhere, I read the date 20.07.1917 (not 27.07.1917). Obviously the diary will confirm the date.

Hi Justin,

I had problems finding the 801st War diary, once I knew where it was I book marked the page, it wasn't digitised so I had a trip down to Kew and photographed it. Most theatres have a book entitled 'With the MT in ......' but I haven't been able to find one for Salonika, what there is though that I think you will be interested in, is a book called 'With the Serbs in Macedonia' it is a first hand account of a member of 708 MT a Ford Motor Van company it has been digitised and can be found here:

With Serbs

I think the Motor Lorry companies operated from a railhead to an advanced supply depot where the Motor Van Companies took over.

I have a couple of other things (Surrey Yeomanry) you may be interested in, if you send me a PM I can email them to you.
