kathleen donaldson Posted 23 November , 2016 Share Posted 23 November , 2016 (edited) In 1916 10 German Soldiers where buried in Kirkdale Cemetery. Despite extensive research in the Liverpool Burial Board Committee minutes I have not found any entry of these Soldier's being exhumed and repatriated back to Germany. In minutes dated 17th May 1923 I have the following record:- Kirkdale Cemetery Referring to the resolution of the Committee of the 15th March last that the exclusive right of burial in the graves of deceased German combatant prisoners of war be granted to the Imperial War Graves Commission, the Town Clerk now submits Deed of Grant and requests authority to seal same. Resolved That:- The Deed of Grant now submitted be approved sealed and stamped. According to the historical history of the Cemetery these German Soldiers were removed. Historical Information This cemetery also contains nine war graves of other nationalities. Originally, there were many more, including American anregisterd German from the First World War and Belgian from both wars, but these were later removed to other national cemeteries in the United Kingdom or repatriated to their home country. There is no record in the Burial register stating what date this occurred. The Soldier's names are:- Date of Burial: 26th July 1916 Name: J. Legh/Leyh Age:? German Prisoner Number 319, 122nd Reserve infantry Place of death: Venice Street Military Hospital, Everton. Frank_East Posted 23 November , 2016 Share Posted 23 November , 2016 It's possible that these German dead were transferred to the dedicated German military cemetery at Cannock,Staffordshire which opened in 1966...not all German dead were transferred and some still lie in British civilian cemeteries. TTracer44 Posted 23 November , 2016 Share Posted 23 November , 2016 The Cannock Chase site is well worth a visit, if you are in the area, we came open it by chance while walking in the Chase. Den
davidbohl Posted 7 December , 2019 Share Posted 7 December , 2019 I think this clip from the Liverpool Echo 15th Mar 1923 from the British Newspaper Archive is probably the source of this thread. I wonder if Gabriel Hansinger and Robert Robrecht are still unaccounted for ? Dave
charlie2 Posted 7 December , 2019 Share Posted 7 December , 2019 (edited) Gabriel Hansinger is not his correct name, he was Uffz. Markus Hausinger, Bavarian 16. Infanterie Regiment. Neither the Volksbund nor the CWGC record where he is buried. The Volksbund does however state that he was unable to be re-intered elsewhere. https://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/detailansicht.html?tx_igverlustsuche_pi2[gid]=6dc5480a9789a52398faa2aa2f348fa6&cHash=3fa7d6f9dd879e8063b9bc1fa9ec64bd Charlie Edited 7 December , 2019 by charlie2
charlie2 Posted 8 December , 2019 Share Posted 8 December , 2019 The same applies for Robert Robrecht of the Garde Füsilier Regt. As they were both not reburied elsewhere, one must presume their graves were not found and they are still buried at Kirkdale. https://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/detailansicht.html?tx_igverlustsuche_pi2[gid]=354c0d62ef9bc7cb4af9bb82c3864497&cHash=535457414a9b5a8ed7809d2f96182315 https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Zoom/D/05/01/C_G1_D_05_01_0213/C_G1_D_05_01_0213_0062.JPG/4 Charlie
