ronmarsden Posted 21 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 21 November , 2016 Thanks for the swift replies, his great coat seems to be good quality and he appears to be wearing leather gloves I wonder if this would indicate an nco? Ron.
Ron Clifton Posted 21 November , 2016 Share Posted 21 November , 2016 Rank insignia were not worn on greatcoats so that is a dead end, I'm afraid. However, as you say, the good quality greatcoat and gloves does suggest that he may have been an NCO. If you have a name (preferably with full forenames) that would help, as you can then search the medal index cards. Ron

johnboy Posted 21 November , 2016 Share Posted 21 November , 2016 Not sure the gloves are leather. Unusual taping of the puttees.? If an NCO would he not have taken off the greatcoat to show his stripes for his family photo?
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 21 November , 2016 Share Posted 21 November , 2016 Was there any difference in the type of greatcoat worn by a Driver (Private) compared to an NCO?
Ron Clifton Posted 21 November , 2016 Share Posted 21 November , 2016 Same design, difference in quality of the material. Ron

Andrew Upton Posted 21 November , 2016 Share Posted 21 November , 2016 There is some disinformation being posted in this thread... Rank insignia was most certainly worn on greatcoats as standard, including the mounted version shown worn above. A good example of an RA soldier in one with Lance Corporal stripes clearly up can be seen linked below. No rank visible would therefore mean the man in the OP was most likely an ordinary Driver/Private soldier/etc, and not an NCO: http://www.kaisersbunker.com/cef/tunics/ceft12.htm Also, unless an NCO had a private purchase version made specifically for him, the type issued to ordinary soldiers and NCO's would have been identical.
