Hi I was wondering with the large number of soldiers that died on the 19th April 1917, especially from East Anglia (I have 2 that died and know of at least 3 more that fought their from Reepham) If there was any planned services etc for that day next year 2017?

Gaza falls within the area of responsibility of the British Consulate-General in Jerusalem

see https://www.gov.uk/government/world/organisations/british-consulate-general-jerusalem

and if anything is planned, then I imagine it would be under their auspices

You can contact the Consul General here britain.jerusalem@fco.gov.uk

The current FO travel advice for individuals wishing to visit Gaza is here https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/israel and in view of this it sounds to me unlikely that any ceremony will take place in Gaza, though this is only my guess.

What may happen is that something is arranged at the Mount Scopus CWGC Cemetery in Jerusalem, where all the EEF's fallen who have no known grave are remembered – see http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/142016/JERUSALEM%20MEMORIAL

If you would like to have a wreath laid on your behalf at one of the Gaza cemeteries, then I understand that, in view of the particular circumstances regarding access here, then this can be arranged for you by the CWGC

You may wish to drop a PM to our GWF Pal 'Eran' who is the Chairman of the Society for the Heritage of WWI in Israel and usually has his finger on the pulse regarding such ceremonies in this neck of the woods; it is possible that he may have up to date information

I have come across a vague idea that one or more of the three Gaza battles might be commemorated next year as part of the "Wales Remembers" centenary initiative.  More info in due course (unless someone else finds it first).

My grandfather died at the Second Battle of Gaza. Like Ronin Reepham I'm wondering if there is any further news on any commemoration of this battle. My grandfather, Sgt Joseph Watts, served in the London Regiment 10th battalion (Hackney) and has no grave, but his name is on the memorial in Jerusalem.

I'm not aware of any official commemoration of The Second Battle of Gaza. By official, I mean CWGC or British Embassy / Consulate.

The Society for the Heritage of WWI in Israel is planning to have a commemoration event on a part of the vast area of this battlefield (Vast in Israeli terms....). The event is to include a short tour, dedication of a commemorative plaque in the area of Tank Redoubt and two talks, one about The Second Battle of Gaza and the second about the first appearance of tanks in this theater of war. The event is being organized by me with a local IDF tank unit, however, it will be open to the general public. Details will be published shortly.

I'll be honored to include reference to individual casualties of The Second Battle of Gaza during the event. Please correspond with me and we'll see what can be done.
