I believe that our international teams can put a lot of descriptions to the photographs. I have been going through a number of them looking for any clues. If I can present an example: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205343927 After considerable searching, I can only find one matching candidate for the grave in the lower right corner but my eyes are not what they used to be: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/756601/DENISON, DYSON The next step would be if anyone can tell me if he was in "A" Company as that seems to be on the cross as well. Jim Strawbridge Posted 17 November , 2016 Share Posted 17 November , 2016 I read the name as DEACON. Possibly D. Deacon who was buried in Gordon Cemetery, Mametz. The countryside looks similar but the layout totally different.
laughton Posted 17 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2016 (edited) Any ideas are good ideas. Deacon is in a "Collective Grave" and his headstone is marked "Known to Be Buried in this Cemetery". Perhaps that is why the two stones beside each other both appear to say "In Memory Of". The one behind them appears to be of the same style and wording as well. If so, beside Deacon would be Lowe or Young. http://archive.cloud.cwgc.org/archive/doc/doc2004336.JPG http://archive.cloud.cwgc.org/archive/doc/doc2662117.JPG The candidates are on this spreadsheet, with tabs for ALL and then sorted by name characters for France and Belgium and only in cemeteries. If we take that it starts with "D" and ends with "ON" that gives us 19 candidates in Belgium. If it is 6 characters in the last name that gives: DALTON D '17680' DALTON D '4999' DAWSON D 'RMA/1964(S)' DAWSON D '11671' If it was Dalton, he would have Mitchell or Troy beside him: http://archive.cloud.cwgc.org/archive/doc/doc2153840.JPG If it is France we have 52 candidates total and 8 of those with 6 characters in the last name, which includes your Deacon: DENTON D A '17690' DALTON D '21933' DALTON D H '8057' DEACON D 'S/12160' DENOON D '3685' DOBSON D 'L/9421' DOBSON D '3289' DOBSON D C '715765' I have dropped my initial candidate as I agree that the last name has only 6 characters and mine had 7. If it is a "Special Memorial" candidate, then Deacon S/12160 in France and Dalton 4999 in Belgium are the only two candidates. Did one them belong to "A" Company? It sure looks a lot more like DEACON that DALTON. We should ask the man in the middle of the photograph, I did not notice him before! dickaren Posted 17 November , 2016 Share Posted 17 November , 2016 (edited) I would go for Denoon in Mareouil Cemetery. Counting from back of cemetery looks like the grave is in the eighth row (H). Compare modern pics of the cemetery with the photo, built on a slope and particularly the bank at the rear of the graves. There is another guy (with a rake?) right at the back of the cemetery also. laughton Posted 18 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2016 Pte. John George Newton #3419 Hertfordshire Regiment Vermelles British Cemetery Plot 1 Row G Grave 4 It would appear that there is a burial service ongoing at the time. These graves are very fresh so this is circa November 1915. The message was that the CVWM site says he was born in LEWISTON and it should say LEWISHAM. Your site page here: http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/detail/83633 This is the information they sent to confirm: John Weatherhead birth reg. I did not post it as it needs the proper wording added and I don’t know if you system allows such links (see at bottom of page for HTML or BB Code). http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205087100 We have been going through the collection looking for great Canadian photographs that are not described. We have found quite a few, many old grave sites. If you can put in the code or wording then we can tell you which photographs match which soldier. BarbaraG Posted 3 December , 2016 Share Posted 3 December , 2016 These two gentlemen are buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery - where the headstones are laid flat due to the sandy soil. Details for one of these casualties were posted way back 14 Feb 2011 - Lincolnshire Major, Just pre war started by ATNMIS. Could anyone advise where copies of the photographs of Lancelot EDWARDS can be found to be added to his IWM Digital Memorial https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/2433826#timeline Also in the photograph is Theodore Stewart LUKIS - whose entry in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour - '...was gazetted Lieut. 15 Dec. 1914, and Capt 13 March, 1915...' https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/2725027 IWM Collection Q

BarbaraG Posted 27 April , 2017 Share Posted 27 April , 2017 (edited) These photographs show groups of men recorded on one Grave Marker. I would like to thank Mr Len Scott for the use of his photographs, which show the GWGC Headstones for Cambrin Churchyard Extension.
