Dragon Posted 10 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 10 September , 2018 (edited) Also in post #22, Michelle has included the French cemetery of Chêne Millet, near Metzeral. (The cemetery shown with the French flag.) It's called Chêne Millet [the Millet oak] because in happier times the painter Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) used to enjoy walking along the vallée de Munster and stopping to make sketches by an oak tree where the cemetery now is. I think (but am not certain) that the oak tree is still there near the edge of the cemetery. Millet stayed with Hartmann, a prominent industrialist in Munster, who opened up travel and tourism to the Vosges by paying for the construction of the tramway along which automotrices trundled up the mountainside to Col de la Schlucht and Hohneck. The tramway was used for military transport during the Great War. This is Cimetière Chêne Millet in its early days.
