BereniceUK Posted 2 November , 2016 Share Posted 2 November , 2016 (edited) CWGC has him as William Lees, but Leese is the correct surname, the family confirms that. So will he be named on the Menin Gate Memorial as Lees? The address on the silk is Henry Street, Tunstall, now in Stoke-on-Trent. The memorial silk has him "laid to rest in France." Was his gravesite originally recorded, then lost? LEES, WILLIAM Rank: Private Service No: 41082 Date of Death: 27/06/1917 Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 10th Bn. ss002d6252 Posted 2 November , 2016 Share Posted 2 November , 2016 His 'CWGC' name should match that shown on the memorial. The effects records show him as Leese. States he was KIA so it doesn't indicate if he had a known grave or not. Craig

BereniceUK Posted 3 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 November , 2016 A mis-transcription by the IWGC then? How simple would it be to convince the CWGC that the name is recorded incorrectly? Thank you, Craig and Diane.
Bardess Posted 3 November , 2016 Share Posted 3 November , 2016 It may be tricky so I would approach Terry Denham by PM
BereniceUK Posted 3 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 November , 2016 I've now seen a photo of William Leese's memorial plaque, which the family have, and the surname's spelt correctly there. I wonder when the error occurred?
