irish79 Posted 29 October , 2016 Share Posted 29 October , 2016 Hello, I am researching the WW1 service of Captain Charles Fox, CBE (Lloyds Medal " S.S. “Orcades”, 10th October 1942"). I have purchased 3 documents from the NA ( ADM340/51/40 , ADM 240/44/599, and ADM 240/44/593). A comment from a newspaper article from 1951 when he retired states " During World War I he served for a period in mine-sweepers in the North Sea ". Record ADM 340/51/40 does not contain much information. From this I can confirm he joined the RNR 31 March 1916 as a sub-lt, and was assigned to yacht patrol. Looks like he undertook some initial training at the shore bases "Thalia" and "Vivid". Other than some information about his masters cert and last civilian voyage on the Den of Glemis, is there anything else to learn from this record? Record ADM 240/44/599 also contain very little information. "Defiance for Modified Sweep Course 9.4.16" ? then "Cancelled \ cancelled commission & destroyed see page 8/303". (page 303 being ADM 240/44/593) Record ADM 240/44/593 shows that he was Temp. Lieut. dated 5.8.16 "Defiance" for courses of instruction in modified sweep 9.4.16. Yacht "Verona" ... Is there anything here that can help me learn what active service he might have seen? Any help would be very much appreciated. Have attached documents. Many thanks, David image 2 image
