johntaylor Posted 2 October , 2016 Share Posted 2 October , 2016 Attached is a postcard sent in 1917 showing a ruined chateau somewhere on the Western Front (France or Belgium). As you see the censor has been very diligent in obscuring the name. There is nothing on the back other than 'Correspondance' and 'Adresse', though the photographer's stamp LS may be a clue. Can anyone identify this building please? All the best, John

johntaylor Posted 2 October , 2016 Author Share Posted 2 October , 2016 Mike, that's truly extraordinary - Vermelles it is. Another shell seems to have landed before the second picture was taken, but there's no doubt it's the same place. Congratulations on your remarkable knowledge, and many thanks. Guest Posted 2 October , 2016 Share Posted 2 October , 2016 All the credit goes to google rather than any remarkable knowledge on my part, but, delighted to be able to help. Cheers Mike

Guest Posted 2 October , 2016 Share Posted 2 October , 2016 I just drove past that today and nearly crashed. There are new glass panels and a few new things that I must investigate (on foot). This old ruined chateau is being renovated. Actually that building has quite a story to tell. For one thing, men joined up there, and, there sat many a tribunal. Aberfeldy Town Hall. johntaylor Posted 2 October , 2016 Author Share Posted 2 October , 2016 I'm still mighty impressed. I thought there were so many ruined chateaux that it would have been impossible to find out with a general search. I'm very happy to be proved wrong!
