I'd guess that platoon Sgt would rule out cavalry and artillery,  unless the man had transferred.

Knowing Deacon is quite common in Leicestershire, I checked SDGW and found a Deacon, Henry, 20616  sgt k.i.a 5/10/17 Leicestershire Reg 7th Batt, maybe not him but it's a start.

The 7th Bedfordshires' Deacon is - I believe - a relative of Martin Deacon of BLARS? Rings a bell at least ... 

 

It may be that the book The Shiney Seventh has a photo of him to either confirm or eliminate him as a candidate (at work so cannot help at the moment).
