Military or civilian at VAD Hospital in York (Clifford St)

Can anyone identify what this person is? He is in amongst soldiers at the doorway of the hospital. He also appears in a ward shot. But his uniform is very odd, being in white (or having a light colour so showing as pale in the black & white postcard). Is he a recovering patient?  Or perhaps a member of hospital staff?  Any ideas?
