adam1981 Posted 24 September , 2016 Share Posted 24 September , 2016 Hello all, My geography of the area involved in the first day of the Somme is not great. I am trying to ascertain if the 1/6th battalion Gordon Highlanders attacked or were involved on 01-07-1916. So far I have conflicting information from searching online. I can find three men KIA and one man DOW on this date. The three men killed in action are buried at Maroeuil Cemetery. Is this in the area of the first day Somme attacks? what was this unit doing on this day? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

adam1981 Posted 26 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 26 September , 2016 (edited) hello, I apologise for my lack of knowledge on this matter, does that mean they were involved in the infamous first day assault or were they holding trenches else where? Chris_Baker Posted 26 September , 2016 Share Posted 26 September , 2016 (edited) Neuville St Vaast and Maroeuil are north of Arras and a long way from the Somme sector. Edited 26 September , 2016 by Chris_Baker
adam1981 Posted 27 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 27 September , 2016 Thanks for clarifying this. It is easy to forget that outside of the vast Somme offensive there were still men I assume being shelled and involved in skirmishes. It would be interesting to learn how many men gave their lives on this infamous date who were not in the Somme assault. But i suppose this would be a near impossible task
EDWARD1 Posted 27 September , 2016 Share Posted 27 September , 2016 On the 1/7/16 the British Front Line in France was aprox 90 miles North to South, Boesinghe. to Maricourt. The1st Somme Front Line was aprox 18 miles, Gommecourt to Maricourt. Eddie
