Patrick H Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 I am trying to identify one WILLIAM AMNER who is commemorated on the Lambourne Essex memorial. All I have is a date of death being 1916 and I have census return which shows him living with his parents in Lambourne. In the 1911 census he is aged 11 so having died in 1916 he would have been aged 16. I have tried every combination I can think of on the CWGC site to no avail. Can anyone help please Patrick
ss002d6252 Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 A W J Ammer (ancestry's transcription - the effects record is difficult to read) was discharged 1 June 16 and died later . He served as #19381 Essex Rgmt and had 13 months qualifying service at time of death. Monies were paid to his widow, Rosana. Craig
IPT Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 He was 16898 6th Royal Fusiliers. Enlisted 28/9/1915 and was discharged 2/3/1916 for being underage.
Patrick H Posted 14 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2016 (edited) That can't be the right man Craig since the census puts him aged 11 in 1911 thus about 16 in 1916 when he died. He would have been too young to get married. Essex Regt would make sense Patrick Edited 14 September , 2016 by Patrick H
Patrick H Posted 14 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2016 IPT - do you have any other information. You say he was discharged for being underage which would accord with his age on the census return but he died in 1916 (after discharge !!) Maybe he died at home ? IPT Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 He has some service papers with those details. Mother Rose Amner, Joshua Cottages, Chigwell Row. I can't see a death at home. I suppose it's possible that he immediately re-enlisted under an alias, but I can't see a good suspect yet.
Patrick H Posted 14 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2016 Definitely the right man. I have Joshua Cottages as his home.
Patrick H Posted 14 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2016 (edited) just checked he's definitely on the Lambourne Cross of Sacrifice as William Amner died 1916 (although the Cross had another mistake giving the wrong year of death of one of my family) . He is not buried in the Church yard but as his address is Chigwell Row, that is a different parish. I will need to check that parish Patrick Not in Chigwell Row churchyard Edited 14 September , 2016 by Patrick H
IPT Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 (edited) There is a William James Amner, (b1885, d.20/10/1918 according to the website), commemorated All Saints, Chigwell Row - http://genpals.co.uk/blog/memorialdetails-2/?value=604 Perhaps that's who it is instead? IPT Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 (edited) There is an SWB for a William James Amner, 58339 Essex Regiment, who was discharged with sickness 1/6/1916. There's a death registered in Ongar 1st Qtr 1917 (potentially died 1916), for a William J Amner, born 1871. Patrick H Posted 15 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 15 September , 2016 that must be the man as Chigwell Row is the next village to Lambourne End, so he is commemorated twice. However the census return puts his date of birth "about 1900" I wonder whether the amner born 1871 is a relative? Your post 3 says he was discharged for being underage and that would agree with the census. His father also William is said to be 37 in 1911 so he would have been born about 1874. Could it have been father and son both dying ?
