Paddy 60th Posted 10 September , 2016 Share Posted 10 September , 2016 Does any Forum member have a trench map covering this area for this particular date ? I'm currently researching my Gt. Uncle, Capt. Charles William Howes 19th Batt. Durham Light Infantry who was killed in action on 22nd April 1918 leading his men in an attack on Martinsart Wood. It would be nice to see a layout of the front on this date. Regards, Roger

Paddy 60th Posted 11 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 11 September , 2016 Many thanks John for the trench map which is very helpful indeed. Interesting to see from the map that on 24th April the 'approximate' British front line was beyond Martinsart Wood and that the Wood was in British hands. Reading the excellent book 'The Durham Pals ' by John Sheen, it does in fact state that 19th Batt. DLI did in fact form up in the front line in the wood before the attack on 22nd. It seems that the Battalion were in fact attacking Aveluy Wood when my Gt. Uncle was killed. All is now much clearer now I can see the positions from the map. Again John, thank you very much. KInd regards, Roger
