rolt968 Posted 7 September , 2016 Share Posted 7 September , 2016 While searching for the elusive James Dorward (of which more in another post). I ran across: L/Cpl James Gordon Durward, 10974, 3 Reserve Scots Guards, died 6 January 1915, aged 54. He is buried in Kilbowie Cemetery, which if I remember rightly is in Clydebank. He had a previous existence between 1879 and 1891 as 4934 Cpl James Gordon Durward, Scots Guards. He died of cancer in Old Kilpatrick. Unusually for a Scottish death certificate, it does not say how long he had been suffering from the fatal condition. His occupation is given as "Railway Yardsman, presently Corporal 3rd Batt Scots Guards" His earlier record is online at FMP. I am a little curious. He was a Corporal from 21 Feb 1885 to 10 April 1887, when he was demoted following a court martial for being drunk on duty. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 20 April 1887. Does anyone know anything about James Gordon Durward? He seems to have been very old (and ill) to be taken back on the strength in mid September 1914. Was he allocated to the reserve in 1887 as a result of his misbehaviour? Or did he perhaps go on a bender celebrating his approaching end of colour service? Radnor Street is the address given in the death record. I used to pass through Singer Station regularly many years ago. (Wasn't Radnor Street heavily damaged in the Clydebank blitz?)
