Memorials in Inverness Old High Church including The Martinpuich Cross

Recommended Posts

I visited Inverness Old High Church on Saturday on Open Doors Days.  I tried to photograph all the memorials and War Memorial inside the church.  The complete set of images with transcriptions of most are on FLICKR.  There are a number of memorials to individual soldiers, mainly WWI as well as some Cameron Highlander War Memorials including the Martinpuich Cross and The Tartan Pimpernel's Field Communion set.

I am still uploading images to FLICKR so probably will be not all there until later today or tomorrow.

The images are too large for here so will just reduce a couple down to be small enough to add.

Wonderful - thank you.

Out of interest, I infer from te mention of a Church Open Doors Day that access is usually difficult - is this so? My younger daughter has just moved to Inverness, and as my wife and I intend to visit next year, this seems like an ideal site to see. (Well, put it like this, I can be left to play nicely while my wife and daughter do something else.

Doors Open Days are held all over the country every year.  I England have them all on the same day but Scotland spreads then over the whole of September with different areas having different weekends. I think there were five or six churches in Inverness open last weekend.  I had been wanting to get in and photograph the War Memorials for some time.  I have done all the WWI pictures in the Old High Church now, all on FLICKR and Canmore but still the Kohima memorial to add.  Some deserters and rebel prisoners were executed in the churchyard after Culloden, there is a gravestone that was said to be used to support the musket and another where the prisoner sat or knelt.  The wall behind has the marks of musket balls though it is covered in ivy at the moment - someone pulled it to one side for me.  Also said to be some musket ball marks on the tower where others were executed.  The site of the church is quite an old one and the bookshop next door is the old Gaelic church.

I think the door is normally locked but sure it must be possible to arrange access if you are visiting the area.

The Episcopal Cathedral has a fine WWI War Memorial across the altar screen which I had photographed previously (the building is normally open).

Thank you for posting this.

There was apparently another name on the Martinpuich Cross, of another posted missing but he turned up alive so was able to remove the name himself.

Episcopal churches in Scotland seem to try to have open doors during the day, but Church of Scotland churches are a lot harder to access, the towns and villages I've visited to date at least. Such a shame, and very frustrating too if there's a memorial inside.

Thank you for posting these images.

The Rev. Dr. Donald Currie Caskie DD OBE OCF - The Tartan Pimpernel - seems to have been quite a character and a very brave man. I appreciate that it's (strictly speaking) off topic, but here's what those nice people over at Wiki say about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Caskie .

Back on topic, I wonder who the person who removed his own name tag from the Martinpuich Cross was? From the photos, it looks as if his name might have started with "S", but that's just my guess.

Don't forget Fort George of course.

They are making a viewing platform on the top of the castle, the courts are moving to a new building.  The museum is at present in a modern building but is moving to the old Town House (I think that is what they call it).

Most of my images of War Memorials are HERE.

All should be on Canmore and some of the Highland ones on the HER.

I did not see and picked up a booklet on the cross and memorials, must be online somewhere!

An excellent set of photos.

Good to see the colours of a SR and 2 Service Battalions well cared for.

I don't think I have seen a war memorial which told that men were brothers before.
