Guest Abby Kemp Posted 4 September , 2016 Share Posted 4 September , 2016 I'm looking for information on why my Great Grandad won the military medal in Aug 1918: L.Corp Thomas Smith, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), S/10020. Would anyone be able to help? Thanks very much. The Edinburgh Gazzette (8 Aug 1918) Military Medal Roll.pdf
Derek Black Posted 5 September , 2016 Share Posted 5 September , 2016 (edited) Abby, The 1st of June Falkirk Herald says a Pte. Thomas Smith was awarded the Military Medal "about a month ago". It also claims he was in the R.A.M.C (with a portrait photo) but attached to the Black Watch. Unless two men called Thomas Smith from Grangemouth won the M.M. at about the same time, this could be your relative. The family info is he was a son of Mr & Mrs Thomas Smith of 166 Lumley St, Gragemouth. That him? If this is your relative, then it's a good bet he was awarded the M.M. for bravery in treating or bringing in wounded around the end of April or early May. A look at the war diary for that time may help narrow it down to an action, or possibly make reference to it.
