Remembered Today:

Sgt Valentine Rowe

Sgt Telegraphist 1009 Valentine Rowe, Signal Corps is remembered on the village war memorial at Bradfield in Berkshire. He was born in the village in 1883 the son of Tom and Dorcas Rowe and became a post office telegraphist.

I can find no trace of him on the CWGC website.

The memorial records his death as having occured in Blomfontein, South Africa.

It is possible that he migrated to South Africa pre-war and was serving with the SA forces.

Does anyone know how to find death certificates from South Africa?

Different chap I'm afraid.

I haave done some more digging: he did emigrate (possibly in 1901) , settled in East London and married  in 1907, wife died 1908, remarried 1909. One child by first wife and at least one by second.

How did the Singal Corps interface with the colonies?  Was there a South African Signal Corps or a South African unit within the Signal Corps?

More importantly - how do I find a death certificate?

He's not on the Overseas Death Index that I can see so perhaps his death was never notified back to the UK (assuming he was/remained a British Citizen)

Phil

Just in case you do not have it, his date of death is 12 October 1918.

His son, Ivan, born 1913 from his second marriage was killed in WW2 in 1944.
