Kathie Posted 30 August , 2016 Share Posted 30 August , 2016 I'm taking a friend to 'sparrow' Matthews grave at corbie and want to show her where he was on 25th November 1915. School magazine says he was in a trench when a grenade landed. Any idea where the trench might have been - 6th battalion royal berkshires. many thanks kathie

Gareth Davies Posted 31 August , 2016 Share Posted 31 August , 2016 (edited) The War Diary says they were at La Boiselle. They were in the trenches having relieved the 8th Norfolks the day before. Prior to the move they had been in the Buire-sur-l'Ancre area. Edited 31 August , 2016 by Gareth Davies
MelPack Posted 31 August , 2016 Share Posted 31 August , 2016 Kathie If you have a subscription to Ancestry then the War Diary is readily available but beware - in the true style of Ancestry indexing, it is actually listed as the Diary for the 8th Battalion ! MelPack Posted 31 August , 2016 Share Posted 31 August , 2016 Kathie Here is the actual Diary entry courtesy of the Regimental museum: 2/Lt St. JB Matthews - wounded by Rifle Grenade at 8am - died after operation at No. 5 CCS at 5-15pm.This officer is a great loss to the Battalion. Enemy are very active with Rifle Grenades. We have none with which to reply - though these have been asked for times without number. Lieut R Litten and Lieut FC Heffer - promoted Temp Captains dated 6th Sept & 23rd Oct respectively. 4 men struck off the strength - sick. http://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/research/war-diaries/detail/6799
Kathie Posted 3 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 September , 2016 Thank you for this detail. My friend edited the history of Matthews school - hence this particular visit. i would delete the other entries (mistake) but don't know how. Derek Black Posted 3 September , 2016 Share Posted 3 September , 2016 Kathie, Once you've opened the thread you want to delete, there's a button called "moderator actions" between the title and first post. Click on that and "delete" will be an option. Derek.
