Bennett Posted 30 August , 2016 Share Posted 30 August , 2016 I have been looking much through my usual sources to discover trench names for the assembly and jumping off points for the 1st Somerset L.I and 1st Rifle Brigade for 0730 July 1st with little success. I have found all the topo & trench locations but have been unsuccessful in locating trench names, especially Valande, 6th Street and Roman Road. Can anyone please assist? Many thanks

mervyn t Posted 24 January , 2017 Share Posted 24 January , 2017 Hello, I wonder if you found the answer to your query on the Trench names' locations. I am tracing my grandfathers movements, 1st Somerset Light Infantry who was involved there and would appreciate any help on locations of the trenches, I see that some of the objectives of the second line, 1st Hants, 1st Somersets and 6th Royal Warwicks was to advance and capture the first objective of the Division P6C93 - Q6C99 - K36C35 - and K3a82. Would anyone know those positions? Any help greatly appreciated. Merv,

Merv, And re: your trenches Merv, you will find Q6C & P6C along the top of this map...... http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A70697/-/collection For instance this is the square with your map reference P6C93 (see attached)......Q6C99 is further along the map to the right.. And this will teach you how to pinpoint the locations using the last two numbers 93 & 99........ http://www.westernfrontassociation.com/the-great-war/great-war-mapping/mapping-the-front-great-war-maps-dvd/great-war-map-lists/855-read-a-trenchmap.html#sthash.4GWt22Mh.dpbs regards Tom Edited 4 February , 2017 by towisuk
