Steven Broomfield Posted 28 August , 2016 Share Posted 28 August , 2016 Mrs Broomfield and I have just returned from a splendid summer's day in the English drizzle at Stourhead House and gardens, a beautiful National Trust property in Wiltshire juat off the A303, where we met up with elder daughter and her boyfriend. As is the way with the NT at present, they are going big on The Centenary, and particularly feature the son and heir, Captain Henry Colt Arthur Hoare, who died of wounds received at Mughar Ridge, Palestine in November 1917 while serving with the Dorset Yeomanry. The letters, photographs and mementos brought a tear to even the hardest of hearts. At the end of hostilities, the family gave a building in the stable yard to the local village (Stourton) as a Memorial Hall. Today the locals were providing refreshments (coffee, bacon bap and some rather toothsome home-made cakes - Dorset Apple Cake highly recommended)in aid of Church funds. On eht wall adjoining the raod are two plaques to the memory of the fallen of both World Wars View from the road

Steven Broomfield Posted 28 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 28 August , 2016 Before anyone asks, I have no idea if Frederick Broomfield is related to me. He died, according to the CWGC, in October 1915 while serving with the 1st Dorsets and is buried at Rouen.
