Hello, I am trying to find more information on Alexander M NICOLL, (Trooper) in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. How do I go about finding out where he was from, parents, etc?

Kindest regards Louise McBow

Louise, assuming that Harry has the right chap, the History of the 6th Cavalry brigade (by Lt J B Bickersteth, MC) has a very good account of the action in which he met his death.  It is available as a reprint: details here

Incidentally, and slightly pedantically, his rank would have been 'Private', not 'Trooper', the latter coming into use in Line Cavalry in 1922.

Harry and Steven, thank you for your quick replies, he is born in Blairgowrie which is right area, however still confused by parents. However I will get back to you on this. Thank you again.

Ah. Scrub my previous suggestion: following the link from Harry I looked in the History of the Household Cavalry, and Nicol was obviously a Reservist, recalled to the Colours in 1914. As the 3rd DG were on their way home from Egypt, Nicol was attached to the Royal Horse Guards when the three regiments of Household cavalry were expanded, and was killed with them at Second Ypres.
