Phil Evans Posted 27 August , 2016 Share Posted 27 August , 2016 It is the map reference. If you look at this link, you will see square M.17, with Butte de Warlencourt written in the top half. Square 17 is divided into four segments by dotted lines. The "d" refers to the bottom right hand quarter and 40.45 is virtually in the centre of it.
