Dear all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me research this man.  I'm not even sure which regiment he served in.  Any help would be much appreciated, indeed I'm expecting the possibility of two 2nd Lieut. H.E. Stanley's...

Thank you and best wishes, R

Hi

It would help if you told us everything you know, however, there is a 2nd Lt.Herbert Ernest Stanley who served with the RFA Cpl. 954, Sgt 875121 and 2nd Lt (A/Capt).Survived and lived at 44 Upper Cliff Rd.,  Gorleston on Sea, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. MIC and award rolls on Ancestry...still looking.

Regards Barry

Born 16.2.1895 died June 1985 aged 90, Great Yarmouth.

Hi Inspector,

I'd love to say I have any information, but I genuinely don't.  I went to an auction today with the intention of buying some WW1 militaria, but the ones I wanted took off....  So I got a little fed up, perhaps v fed up, and bid totally spur of the moment on a collection of photos which I thought were really lovely.  With them, there was a lone silver BWM to this officer, hence my interest to see what I can about him and work out if the medal and photos correlate.  There's no writing anywhere, it's just images/blank cards.

Hi Richard

Having looked at the auction site and the collection, can you post a pic. of the officer in uniform? Herbert Ernest's son Herbert C Stanley died in 2012 so the collection could have come from his family. Trees on Ancestry. Any clues on the family photos, Photographer, date, place ?

Regards Barry

The insignia on bottom left looks like RFA., his parents were Arthur John and Emmeline.

Oh god, I always end up buying the sad ones!

will try and post a photo tomorrow...  thanks Barry.  Think it was a real £60 gamble... didn't have a clue what I was going for.

Ah, thank goodness for that!

Well there's all the answers I sought then.  He's a RFA Officer in the group photo shot, or rather 'it's' an officer in the group photo shot wearing a RFA badge on his cap and RFA insignia on his lapels, so I think that's it.  Thank you.  That's our man. It clearly came onto the market following his son's death.

Auction house in East Anglia, Great Yarmouth in East Anglia, all fits.  Just need to dig out his MIC to find out when he entered theatre of operations/see if I'm missing a star as well as VM

Dear Richard,

If I may say so, 60 quid is peanuts for such an interesting convolute.

Indeed, The Inspector (In true Great War Forum tradition) has kindly provided you with a research service that would easily equal that amount.

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Hi Kim,You are 100% right.

The Great War Forum is a godsend for youngish collectors like me....  but equally, if it wasn't for the generosity of people like Barry in terms of digging out information and offering their advice, it would be so hard to learn and understand the intricacies of this passion.  I know that I'm genuinely grateful for every response that pings up.  Equally, when the day comes when I have an understanding akin to the top people here, I'm definitely going to use that to help newbies and get them on the same road to collecting.

Today I got lucky (and I respect that)... but I've bought fakes and made silly errors before, hence asking for help and gratefully saying 'thank you!'

ps: I'm also thinking of setting up a small medal club at school where I work.  Some children love history, especially military history, and with a budget of £250 from the parents fund, we could have a fascinating time buying and selling medals on eeee buy gum...  they'd be fascinated seeing soldiers files at Kew and I know it's possible to get this stuff up and running.

so again, advice by members here is much appreciated and highly valued.

R.
