patrick anderson Posted 20 August , 2016 Share Posted 20 August , 2016 I am researching the Black Watch casualty Sgt 316 John SALMOND , Black Watch , a regular soldier from Bridge of Allan in Stirlingshire killed in action at the Battle of Loos on 25th September 1915 when serving with the 2nd Battalion Black Watch . For some unknown reason he is not recorded in the pages of the 2nd battalion Black Watch in the book on the Black Watch in the Great War edited by Major General A G Waughope and not even recorded as a casualty in that Battalion section for ORs . He is not listed in the Honours and Awards section of that Battalion pages re MID . The book "BRIDGE OF ALLAN 'S ACTIVITIES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 records him being a casualty on the towns war memorial AND it lists him having been awarded a MID . i'm having problems trying to find the Mention in Despatches . Any ideas please so that his MID can be recorded on offical rolls of honours ?? thank you for your help or advice to find his MID record as his personal record did not survive the WW2 bombing etc Patrick W Anderson
Ron Abbott Posted 21 August , 2016 Share Posted 21 August , 2016 His death appears to be mentioned in various newspaper articles from October 1915, referring to him as a Sergeant in the 2nd Bn. Black Watch, saying that he was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Salmond of the Bridge of Allan. . (Stirling Observer editions of 9th, 19th and 23rd October 1915). There is mention of him having been shot through the head. However, that's all I can see........as my subscription has expired.
patrick anderson Posted 22 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 22 August , 2016 Hi Ron , thanks for that info and I wonder if anyone on the site will be able to get a copy of that obituary reporting being shot through the head ! The Bridge of Allan book on the great war records he got a MID and his brother ,L/Cpl Henry (Harry ) Salmond , RE awarded a MM and both from 6 Allanbank Bridge Of Allan. Would not have thought that anyone would record MID if he had not been awarded it !! any ideas
HarryBrook Posted 23 August , 2016 Share Posted 23 August , 2016 The report of John Salmond being shot through the head was published in the Stirling Observer on Saturday October 9 1915, the items on October 19 and 23 were a notice of his death in the births, marriages and deaths column and an acknowledgement for messages of sympathy received. Regarding his M.I.D., his name is not listed in "Honour Those Mentioned in the Great War - Mentions in Despatches 1914 - 1922" by Michael Maton, a three volume set of listings of M.I.Ds. in the London Gazette. There is no note of the issue of the emblem for M.I.D. on his medal index card. So it would appear that it was not a gazetted M.I.D.
Derek Black Posted 23 August , 2016 Share Posted 23 August , 2016 It's possible the family could have confused his being praised, in writing or directly, by a superior officer at battalion or brigade level for work well done, as opposed to an actual M.i.D.? David_Underdown Posted 23 August , 2016 Share Posted 23 August , 2016 No mention of "Emblems" on either of his medal cards (he's also erroneously listed as 316 J Salmon), and no additional card for a Mention, so the evidence is rather against it. Could have been a divisional card, or maybe a B class mention which wasn't gazetted.
patrick anderson Posted 27 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 27 August , 2016 Thank you all for your input and yes I too noted his medal card under SALMOND or SALMON only recording his Medals and NO MID recorded. I am pleased to report that THE Scottish National War Memorial at the Edinburgh Castle has ACCEPTED the name of sGT 316 John Salmond, Black Watch 2nd Battalion as a Casualty of War . Info from Lt Col Roger J. Binks. , Keeper of Rolls at the Scottish National War Memorial in the recent days . Now awaiting the ACCEPTANCE for inclusion onto the CWGC index . thanks ALL Patrick W Anderson
bwarchive Posted 12 January , 2017 Share Posted 12 January , 2017 That would explain a mysterious call from Binks. I am glad he has been accepted. Good luck with the CWGC.
patrick anderson Posted 29 March , 2017 Author Share Posted 29 March , 2017 bwarchive yep the CWGC have accepted the name of Sgt John Salmond , Black Watch too strange why Sgt Salmond BW is not listed in the casualties list of the books on the Regiment in the Great War edited by Wauchope ! Now added and Remembered for Ever we hope
