Very quick shipping from the seller means -- it has arrived.

Actually blade and scabbard are in better condition than I expected:

I can confirm that all of my Siamese bayonets have at least partial Enfield inspection stamps to the left of the bend test:

4thGordons,

Your sure scored one nice bayonet and scabbard there, glad it cleaned up so well for you. The numbers are clear and the wood grips even look better than most.

You have a fine collection of Siamese gear, thank you for sharing. Also the E now explains itself, thank you.

Cheers.

Chris,

A much better looking blade than it appeared on my phone.

Congratulations on the Siamese connection.

JMB,

This is the bayonet I mentioned earlier in the forum which I had known about at the time but did not know the numbers of. I was able to get a few photo's on Saturday when driving through the owners area. I offered to give it a new home and/or a good clean and oil but he once again declined. Looks like No 8811.

Cheers.

Duly added to the list.

JBM,

Another smiling tiger just popped up on eBay here, looks like number 1926, it also has the metal scabbard. The E is also very clear on this one.

Cheers

I think that when JMB started researching these known examples numbered less than 30 or so - max. Figures must be well up there by now! An update JMB?

Mr T—thank you for that new one, it’s so nice to have eyes on the ground in Oz.

Emperor T—I think that my grand total about 3 or 4 yrs ago was only 23! Now it stands at 69 or 70.

I wonder what the number will be at end of 2025........I’ll take 150.

JMB

JBM,

I agree, I did miss read the number above; it does look 8833 not 8811. Another one sold at an auction in Melbourne recently but i can't make out the numbers clear enough for it to be a counter, it also had the metal scabbard.

cheers.

And another.....currently on Ebay as a Smiling Tiger bayonet.

I read that as 1526? I haven't kept up with it all so my apologies if you already have this one but best to be safe than sorry.

4thVGBH,

That was the one I added on Thursday, I believe that the second number is a 9 not 5, 1926. The numbers are a little confusing tho but a 9 slightly on its side looks very similar.

Cheers.

JMB1943,

We have another new smiling tiger bayonet to add to the list. It just showed up on eBay and it has the metal scabbard. The photo is not the best but I think the number is 3810.

Mr. Ryan,

Thank you again for a new one, #3810.

It is interesting that there is (obviously) a finite number of these Smiling Tigers in existence, and yet every month or so a new one turns up.

I wonder how much the scenario “collector buys/collector dies/ widow sells” plays into this.

Regards,

JMB

JMB1943,

On request, the seller sent me through a couple of better photo's of Smiling Tiger No 3814 just to be sure. What a difference a different light on the subject makes.

Yes, they just keep trickling in, and you make a good point about where they may be coming from. I think to preserve these old bayonets, we as collectors should keep a reasonable record of what we have, "I have a scrap book" approx. its worth and what should be done with it when time comes; including names of someone that could handle the sale or other collectors that may be interested etc. Could not think of anything worse than thinking they would end up as scrap metal.

S0002.jpg

Sorry, No is 3810 not 3814.

This one is owned by a Fella in Canberra . He posted it when he got his matching rifle back in January this year.   9792 I think maybe the smithy was drinking when he stamped them

Hello Phil, would it be possible to have the Canberra fella post another full-face photo, like this one, but showing the full ears?

I am trying to compare measurements of the smiling tiger face at different times in the sequence 1-10,000.

JMB

Hello Phil,

Thanks for your help with this.

So, Century Arms bought them; it will be interesting to see how many of the original 10K were recovered!!

Can’t find that post, however I came across a couple of photos from January I don’t think I posted here. I’ve been more active on the Rifles than the Bayonets lately. If I come across anything I will send it through. Keep in touch

cheers Phil
