Phil B Posted 2 August Share Posted 2 August Hi Guys just thought I would add this type 45 for a Siamese numeral reference. Looks like the restamp on that 1907 was done in Thailand. Maybe someone trying to cover up a lost one . Anyway Enjoy your trip Terry . ttfn Phil

Phil B Posted 3 August Share Posted 3 August These just came across my Facebook group. I’m trying to get a better photo however this is very very significant. looking forward to this discussion. cheers Phil
JMB1943 Posted 3 August Author Share Posted 3 August Phil B, I see #'s 3816, 96 and 298X, of which #96 has been previously recorded. Sorry, but you'll have to enlighten me as to something "very, very significant." Regards, JMB
Phil B Posted 3 August Share Posted 3 August Significant in relation to the old markings are so clear and the tiger is stamped over the top of 1907 , I’ve never seen so much of the original markings before phil
NDodd Posted 14 August Share Posted 14 August I purchased this one last year at a car boot sale in Western Australia. I know one of the figures is upside down. The frog is a reproduction, but the scabbard is original.
JMB1943 Posted 14 August Author Share Posted 14 August NDodd, Welcome to the GWF in general, and to this topic in particular. No upside numerals, unfortunately as that would have been a rarity! I read it as #6014 (which slots into the Table of July 15, right next to #6013). Most of us have the replacement sheet metal scabbard, rather than the original leather model. Thanks for posting this nice-looking example, which has had all of the original British markings removed. Regards, JMB
t.ryan Posted 22 August Share Posted 22 August Back home again, and it looks like things have been very quiet on this post. Went to the Toowoomba, Qld. gun show last weekend and was able to meet up with Phil from this forum. We came across the expensive smiling tiger # 9459 and had a look and got a photo, but it is already listed. The asking price $600, so I expect that it will still be there next show. I did come up with one new smiling cat whilst travelling, it is now resting in my cupboard and may end up on Phil's ever growing cat breeding farm in the future. # 9559 which is a new one for the list. The bayonet weight is 494g. I did not come across any RAF marked bayonets, that post looks even more quiet. Cheers, TR
Phil B Posted 22 August Share Posted 22 August As Terry said we were able to meet up in Toowoomba. The tiger we left behind was one from eBay a few months back . The catch was ceased and way out of my price range. I did however get a picture of one of my friends smiling 1907 . Currently I’m working on an update to the video I posted on YouTube last year regarding the Wild Tiger Corps type 62s . I’ll post it when I’m finished. JMB1943 Posted 22 August Author Share Posted 22 August Mr TR & Phil B, Happy to see that you two fearless hunters came back from walkabout unscathed, but with a trophy each. Yes, so quiet you could hear a kitten meowing! Have added #9559 and #827 to the list. Regards, JMB
trajan Posted 2 September Share Posted 2 September I hate the way that family and work circumstances force long absences from GWF but is is always so cheering to see the Smiling Tigers continue to advance forward! And JMB, I love that facial recognition approach!!! Of interest to me is the way that some Tigers have the maker's name scrubbed, others not so... Phil B Posted 4 September Share Posted 4 September Facebook find in Sweden 8594 . And I will have a couple more soon from a post I did over the weekend. I’ve also added a photo of 4 from my post from another member. Hope this gets you guys excited. I haven’t translated the 4 , thought I’d let you guys have the fun , *** ill let you know when the others come up . cheers phil
t.ryan Posted 4 September Share Posted 4 September Phil, Just when we thought that the cats had died off, you have had a good new litter. #8594 is a new one for the list. The other 4 numbers are a little unclear, he may be able to help us out with a better photo of each number, but to me they appear to be #1761, #9372, #836? and #1658. There is a #9372 already listed and I believe it is the same photo. #1761 & #1658 are new numbers for the list, and that last figure on bayonet 3 is to hard to call. We will see what JMB thinks. JMB1943 Posted 4 September Author Share Posted 4 September Phil B, Just when we thought that it was all over… Currently away from my PC, then visiting my son and his family in Virginia for a few days on the way home. Mr TR. can do the numbers, and I will update the Table sometime around later in September. Regards, JMB
t.ryan Posted 4 September Share Posted 4 September Phil, JMB, I have done a little detective work and we already have a photo of # 8363 on the list, I am pretty sure that it is the same as the photo of the third bayonet above with the hard to see last figure. I think a photo taken from a different angle may show that last figure more clearly. On # 1761, notice how the #1s are laying on their sides more than usual, must have been a different stamper working that day. Enjoy your time away JMB, travel safe. t.ryan Posted 14 September Share Posted 14 September JMB, After a fair search I finally came up with a new number for the list I believe. A nice clear #9908. Three of the five bayonets from Phil's last litter also will be new to the list. #1658, #1761 and #8594 were all good finds, the other two were already listed. Have you heard anything else from the collector from the other forum that supposedly has 15 smiling tigers. It would be nice to see what he is holding on to. We have another gun show coming up in driving distance Sat./Sun. week, so will do the usual checks looking for anything new. Cheers, TR.
t.ryan Posted 24 September Share Posted 24 September JMB, A visit to the Maitland gun show on Saturday morning gave me the chance to come across a couple of new smiling tiger bayonet numbers. Thanks to the seller, I was able to get a photo of each for the list but because of the asking price, a cool $465 ea., I had to leave these two behind. Both had replacement grips and metal scabbards. #5603 and the other #8832 which I was surprised to see was just one number off the one I recently owned and is now in Phil Bs cat breeding collection. A good show but not many bargains or hidden gems to be found for me this time round. Cheers, TR
JMB1943 Posted 24 September Author Share Posted 24 September (edited) Mr TR, It seems to me that bayonet prices are just going into the silly region. Were that dealer’s other offerings equally over-priced? Thinking about it, perhaps his asking price was based on what he had to pay for it; with the internet, now everyone has access to production numbers and comparative values. I may have to reconsider “over-priced”! Anyway, you did at least register a couple of new numbers, so worth the trip……I’ll put the new list together at the end of the month. Regards, JMB EDIT: Does 8832 look like Wilkinson or Sanderson? Edited 24 September by JMB1943 Add info
t.ryan Posted 25 September Share Posted 25 September JMB I picked up #456 for Phil at the Bathurst gun show in March for $350 off the same dealer, so $350 to $465 each in 6 months is a fairly steep increase which ever way you look at it. #456 had replacement grips and screws and a newish looking black painted scabbard. Saturday's bayonets both had replacement grips and screws and one also had a newish looking black painted scabbard, so it was a price change, not a better product. Not sure of his other bayonet prices but I do know that prices are up all over, the US M7 bayonet is one that has jumped up heaps in the last couple of years, $220 about minimum here now. Prices are also on the rise for 07 scabbards, some over $100 at the shows now, but plenty of Owen gun bayonet scabbards selling a lot cheaper. Not sure of maker of #8832 but I did speak to Ian Skennerton on Saturday and it is his belief that the 10,000 contract bayonets should have nothing but the tiger head and # on one side and only X and maybe anything in close proximity to the x on the other side, everything else was scrubbed off. He believes some were re numbered since without complete rescrub. More to look into there.!!! Cheers, TR
JMB1943 Posted 25 September Author Share Posted 25 September Mr TR, I know that you are the Keeper of the Photos, so here is #4803 from a UK website. I had originally recorded this in January of this year, but still sitting there at Sterling 375. Has a nicely polished scabbard, completed by some very nice dents!!! https://www.gunstar.co.uk/All-Guns-for-sale?sstr=siamese+bayonet Regards, JMB
Phil B Posted 26 September Share Posted 26 September (edited) Hi guys this one just turned up on a Facebook group post. This is the second one that I’ve seen chromed . I will check it against mine and see if they could be related. cheers phil Edited 26 September by Phil B
JMB1943 Posted 1 October Author Share Posted 1 October Phil, I read that as #7214, and have added to the register. Is that close to the serial of your chromed example? Regards, JMB
trajan Posted 1 October Share Posted 1 October So, the numbers of example keep climbing! This is such an illuminating thread in terms of weapon survival via the surplus market! Julian
JMB1943 Posted 1 October Author Share Posted 1 October Trajan, Yes it is, and also shows the value of extra feet on the ground so to speak. Without TR and PhilB we would barely have reached 20 or so examples. Updated register added here, and we are at 264. Can The Keeper of the Photos check whether 9908 or 9903 is the real number? I am a little glassy-eyed here!!
