Tonyjay54 Posted 11 August , 2016 Share Posted 11 August , 2016 (edited) Good evening everyone , could I please ask for your kind assistance. I am researching my great uncles service and death at the battle of the Somme . By reading the Middlesex's regimental war diary for the 4th of October 1916 , I discovered that he was reported missing together with his officer, Lt Prockter and fourteen of his comrades from post 6 , Trones Wood . The diary states there was no clue as to what happened to them and my uncle's death is recorded on the Thiepval memorial. The officers body was recovered and is buried at the London cemetery. I have tried to locate post 6 on a trench map I found on the internet but I was unsuccessful in finding it . I suspect it was me being unable to decipher the map. Does anyone have suggestions as to what I could do to locate it please Edited 11 August , 2016 by Tonyjay54
sotonmate Posted 11 August , 2016 Share Posted 11 August , 2016 (edited) You could try the War Diary of 167 Infantry Brigade, within which 1/7 Middlesex fought on the Somme. There is often a more detailed map presence, plus plans/orders there: http://discovery.nationalarchives.co.uk/details/r/C14055991 Edited 11 August , 2016 by sotonmate
clk Posted 11 August , 2016 Share Posted 11 August , 2016 Hi, 33 minutes ago, sotonmate said: You could try the War Diary of 167 Infantry Brigade, within which 1/7 Middlesex fought on the Somme. I might have missed something though. Regards Chris
