S.Nicholson Posted 9 August , 2016 Share Posted 9 August , 2016 (edited) My grandfather served in the above three regiments. He joined the North. Fus, number 32/612. I believe this was the second N.E.R. pals battalion. and was formed in Ripon in late 1915. He then served in the Yorks and Lancs, no 242234 and finally the Durham Light Infantry no 93628. Does anyone know where I can find out more information about when he moved, which battalions he served in and as what? He survived the war and worked for the LNER, as it became, but died having been crippled with severe rheumatoid arthritis after the second world war. Any information gratefully received. HarryBrook Posted 10 August , 2016 Share Posted 10 August , 2016 The medal roll for the Durham Light infantry gives his former regiments and battalions as 17th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers and 1/5th York and Lancaster Regt. It does not give any dates of transfer and does not give the battalion of the D.L.I. S.Nicholson Posted 10 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 10 August , 2016 Thanks very much for this. 17th Bn N.F. would make sense as that was the first Bn. raised by the North Eastern Railway and the 32nd was an extra shorter lived effort. very kind of you to add the links, much appreciated
clk Posted 10 August , 2016 Share Posted 10 August , 2016 Hi, Looking at just a few men with close numbers to his 242234 Y&L 1917 TF renumber (see the LLT here for a explanation) who have surviving service records, there seems to be a clear pattern. 242223 (Heaton*) was renumbered from 6108 242231 (Mills*) was renumbered from 6117 242232 (Moate) was renumbered from 6118 242234 242236 (Pearson*) was renumbered from 6122 *These men have surviving service records which show that they were originally transferred to the 1/5 York & Lancaster Regiment from the 17 Northumberland Fusiliers under Army Council Instruction 1499 on 10th September 1916, whilst at 31 Infantry Base Depot, having arrived in France on 29th August 1916. They then "joined" companies of the 1/5 Y&L on 13th September 1916. That date ties in with the war diary entry for the day which reads "137 O.R. arrived from pioneer battalion Northumberland Fusiliers". Ellis1918 Posted 11 August , 2016 Share Posted 11 August , 2016 The York & Lancaster regimental museum is at Clifton Park in Rotherham. 1/5th Y&L were the Rotherham territorials . The war diaries are available on Ancestry.
