Sgt. Arthur Leonard Mann

My Father, Sgt. Arthur Leonard Mann enlisted into the 6th Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment (No.11402) in 1914.  He was wounded whilst with the Dorsetshires and at some point - possibly after September 1916 - he was transferred to the 2nd Btn. Leinster Regiment (No.5339) and again later into the 1st Btn.of the same Regiment.  I have not been able to find his Service Record or Pension Record.  Can anyone advise me where I can search to try to find the approximate dates when these moves might have taken place. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hello,

I don't know if you've seen Leonard's medal roll index card (Ancestry, free to view). Not actually on the card itself but on the previous page it states "Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians)". I've no idea what the Canadian reference is about unless at some point he was attached to a Canadian Regiment. I wonder if the Canadian reference may open up a new Avenue (not cul-de-sac) of research for you. Hopefully another member will come along with some form of explanation.

As far as his two service numbers go, I'd have thought the 4 digit number (pre war territorial?) would pre date the 5 digit one.

At risk of repeating what you already know, his medal entitlement was the 14-15 star trio and he first served abroad on the 13/7/15 in the Balkans theatre (Gallipoli perhaps?).

I'm sorry there are no definites in this post but it's the best I can manage at this time on a Sunday.

Regards

Simon

Nearest I can find is 5352 Eli Wilcox. He transferred from the Dorsetshire Regiment 30/11/1916. A number of men with similar Leinster numbers appear to have transferred from the Dorsets, so he was probably part of group of men transferred.

For what it's worth, i'd suggest your father enlisted in early September 1914 in London, (most of the Dorsteshire men with similar numbers seem to be from the London area - they must have been recruiting there), and joined at Dorchester around 9/9/1914.

Woodentoys,

Having only just checked your profile I didn't realise that you had already started a similar thread in 2014 and received a number of posts offering some good advice/suggestions. By starting a fresh thread on the same subject without referring to the previous one you run the risk of other members wasting their time looking for information you are obviously already in possession of.

Regards

Simon

Thank you IPT - that is very helpful.   As you say it is quite possible he was part of a group that were all transferred to the Leinster's at the same time but I now have a date to keep in mind when doing some more research.  Many thanks for all your help.

Simon - apologies if I have unintentially caused a problem - I am just trying to fit a few more pieces of the puzzle together.

Beryl,

You've caused no problem, it can be frustrating to find out that what you think you've found in respect of answering the post was already known. Good luck with your research,

Simon
