10.05.17 [Lieut Col Wingate]

I formally “took over” command of No 17 CCS from Lieut Col Langstaff this morning and reported the fact officially to the DMS 2^nd Army in accordance with his No PA 27/16 dated 5.2.16. Took over all Canteen money from Lieut Col Langstaff, 690.55 francs and placed it in Cash Box, one key of which I gave to Capt Flood, RAMC and the other I retained in my own possession.

No 6 ambulance train came in the morning and took away, lying 27, sitting 36 including one Diphtheria, one NYD mental and one Epilepsy; discharged to duty 6; escort of one NCO, Cpl Draper and one private RAMC accompanied the mental case, Pte Burt, 68^th MGC.

One death occurred in hospital yesterday, 9.5.17. Capt Flood checked the kits of deceased patients and transferred monies to the Unit Imprest Account as follows:

Gave Cpl Moody 390 francs to obtain Beer for Canteen which will be obtained this evening. Canteen empty, no takings today.

Received wire from DMS that an empty train would arrive tomorrow, Sunday, at 10am.

Receiving day. Capt Lane reported that a civilian “Belgian” had been injured by a Staff Car and brought into hospital by an ASC Officer – injury to head, detained for treatment and observation. No 10 ambulance train arrived 10am and transferred 29 lying and 8 sitting cases.

Noon state – Admitted 21; evacuated 37; to duty 5; remaining 129 – wounded 29, sick 100.

During the afternoon admitted 2 ‘query’ mental cases – Spr Douglas and Pte Gough – both probably mental exhaustion, also one case “fits – epileptic”. All three cases sent to Major Bindloss’ ward.

During afternoon Rfn Roberts had a ‘fit’ but it was not epileptic and appeared to be hysterical, there being no foaming at mouth and no loss of corneal reflex. Capt O’Connor, Major Bindloss and myself saw the patient while he was in this fit.

Noon state – Admitted 96; evacuated NIL; to duty 1; remaining = wounded 74, sick 150. 3 cases NYD shell shock awaiting evacuation.

Colonel Gordon-Watson visited the hospital this morning. A small shed was erected for GDO’s of theatre for washing up etc.

2 cases NYD mental and one case of epilepsy awaiting evacuation. Submitted Capt Todd’s leave application for 21 days to be married. Applied for electric fan for Xray room.

Dvr Murgatroyd, ASC MT was discharged to duty. Concert at No 3 Canadian CCS.

Specifications and authority for wood from X Corps for Matron’s office arrived sanctioned. I went round all wards and saw and examined several cases including all venereal cases [4].

H B Rendle, Esq, YMCA Staff called and made enquiries re miscarriage of a registered letter brought to COs office for posting sometime between 7^th and 14^th April last. This letter has not yet been received by Mrs Rendle, 2 Bickton Place, Exmouth, Devon to whom it was addressed.

Lieut Col Dawson, OC 6^th London Field Ambulance, called this afternoon re 5 hospital marquees lent to him by Lieut Col Langstaff some months ago. He now wishes to hand over 5 new marquees, which he is drawing today from Reninghelst in exchange, instead of striking the marquees which Colonel Langstaff lent him.

Capt Blair sick in bed with sore throat “quinsy”, left tonsil, temp 103. Ordered a carbolic gargle and Sodic Salicyl gr X T d 3. Gave Cpl Moody 300 francs for dry Canteen. Went to Bailleul with Capt Wigmore, RAMC. Received notice that an ambulance train would arrive tomorrow.

Capt Blair distinctly better this morning – temp 100.6, throat much cleaner and remains in bed for today.

No 22 ambulance train arrived and took 52 lying and 28 sitting, and 8 sitting for Hazebrouck [scabies]. Admissions nil; evacuated 83; to duty 5; remaining 125. No Albuminuria or Nephritis cases were evacuated as Colonel Soltau visited the CCS this morning and considered it undesirable to transfer Albuminuria or kidney cases as long as there were any lung symptoms, ie fluid in pleura, or anything over a trace of Albumin in their urine. Colonel Soltau also saw the 2 mental and epilepsy cases and agreed with the diagnosis made here at 17 CCS.

I held Box Respirator drill this morning at 10am of all personnel that could be spared, the remainder to come on Friday at 2pm.

Receiving day. Capt Blair distinctly better. Temp 99.4, pulse rate 66 per minute. DMS accompanied by DDGMS visited the CCS this morning at 11:40am and stayed about 10 minutes. Surgeon General MacPherson was very pleased with the latrine system. The soft soap with Cresol and paraffin has today been used by patients in the bathroom and the patients stated that they liked it.

Received a telephone message from No 3 Canadian CCS to the effect that Colonel Soltau would give a demonstration to all Medical Officers at No 3 Canadian CCS at 3:30pm on Tuesday next, 22/05/17. Major Scrimgeour, CAMC and Capt Lyall, CAMC called to inquire about the way in which the Unit Dry and Wet Canteen was conducted in order that they might start a similar institution at No 3 Canadian CCS for their personnel.

No 15 Princess Christian ambulance train called today and took away 38 patients of which 8 cases were for Hazebrouck. Capt Blair, although feeling better, had a rise of temp this evening to 102^o. Rev Father Crisp left for Cassel en route to the the United Kingdom on 10 days leave.

Capt Blair distinctly better today, temp 97.8 this morning. Tongue clean and throat practically recovered. Accompanied by Major Bindloss, Capts Flood, Lane and O’Neill attended last meeting of the Medical Society at Bailleul this afternoon.

Admissions 121 – wounded 32, sick 89. Discharged to Hazebrouck by passenger train 2; to duty 2; remaining 190 – wounded 67, sick 122 and 1 Belgian civilian.

Band of 6^th London Field Ambulance played to patients this afternoon. I inspected the remainder of personnel in Box Respirator drill at 2pm before going to the Medical meeting.

I went over to No 2 Canadian CCS and saw Major Robertson and Major Strudly perform a blood intravenous transfusion into a patient from a normal adult; the change in the patient was most marked, his pulse from being 150 per minute became 96 per minute and general mental state of patient became markedly improved, the patient complaining of pain in his wounded leg wound which was a tourniquet showing that the increased blood pressure was making itself felt. I also saw Lieut O’Neill’s patient, an Officer, Lieut Potts, who had been wounded in the neck and who had apparently swallowed the foreign body which had passed into the oesophagus. A foreign body could be distinctly seen in the abdomen by “Screen”.

Colonel Chopping rang me up on the ‘phone and said he would come and see me tomorrow [20^th] about tea time and also spoke to me about the EMO on the Railway Station at Remy Siding.

The train which was coming today was cancelled at 2:30pm. Pte Vincent, “Immature” attached 17 CCS, was discharged hospital to duty. Capt Blair much better and is now practically convalescent.

On going round wards last evening with the Matron I found Pte Scott, the special orderly in attendance on Pte Moss, absent from his tent. When he returned he stated he had just gone to the cook-house to fetch some water. I awarded him 3 days FP No 2 for irregular conduct.

Capt Dubros visited me today. Arranged for 3 Nursing Sisters to go for a drive tomorrow at 9am. Colonel Chopping, DADMS 2^nd Army, visited 17 CCS this afternoon.

Hospital state at 2pm – Admissions nil; discharged to duty 4; remaining 183 – wounded 67, sick 115 including 1 Belgian civilian. Capt Blair is now convalescent but looks pale and anaemic.

Receiving Day. No 5 ambulance train called and took away 50 lying and 20 sitting cases; to Hazebrouck per passenger train 2; to duty 6; to No 4 Stationary Hospital 1 NYD shell shock and the Belgian civilian discharged to his home. Remaining at 4pm 160 – wounded 36, sick 124; admitted from 8:30am to 4pm 57.

Colonel Gordon-Watson called and saw several cases and spoke about teams and also re Capt Blair having some leave. Rang up Colonel Chopping on ‘phone and arranged to see him tomorrow at his office between 5 and 6pm.

Colonel Soltau visited wards this morning and gave a lecture on treatment of gassed cases at No 3 Canadian CCS at 3:30pm this afternoon. He, afterwards, came and saw a case of Major Bindloss, a patient suffering from Pharyngitis, query, specific.

I accompanied him after tea to the office of DMS 2^nd Army and had an interview with Lieut Col Chopping.

One Medical Officer, Capt Brawshaw, RAMC [TF] and 15 ORs arrived for temporary duty.

Orders received this morning for 10870 Pte Robinson, G W, RAMC to report to OC, Transportation Troops Depot, Boulogne with view to transfer to RE Construction Company.

Leave warrant for Lieut O’Neill, RAMC and Pte Stevenson, RAMC arrived this evening.

Admitted 14; discharged to duty 11; transferred 1 eye case to No 15 CCS.

Colonel Gordon-Watson visited CCS today and lunched with Officers.

No 2 ambulance train cleared today taking 49 lying, 39 sitting and 1 sitting case to Hazebrouck. Discharged to duty 15; remaining 113 – wounded 45, sick 68.

Colonel Gordon-Watson visited the CCS this morning with Surgeon General Sir Anthony Bowlby. Lieut & QM Rapson drew 3,500 francs for pay of Unit which was paid out by Capt Flood at 5:30pm.

Capt Meyer, Capt Marshall, Miss Hickman and Pte Bossom, RAMC returned today from Aubigny.

Lieut & QM Rapson drew my attention to a soiled blanket which is stated to have been handed over to one of the Field Ambulance Motor Cars in exchange for one taken in with a patient sent in the Car. The suggestion that the soiling was due to brain matter is absurd as the soiled matter is distinctly food stuff, [meat] vomited – no brain case has been admitted lately. I investigated the matter and am satisfied that the exchange of the blanket did not take place at this CCS.

 

25.05.17

Receiving day. At 8:30am this morning, number of patients in hospital 113 – wounded 45, sick 68.

Rang up DMS Office and reported to Capt Gibbons there that Capt Meyer, Capt Marshall, Miss Hickman and Pte Bossom had returned last evening from Aubigny and asked Capt Gibbons to speak to Colonel Chopping re Capt Blair’s leave.

The DMS visited the CCS this afternoon and told me to arrange to accommodate 750 patients. This I arranged to do and telephoned later to Colonel Chopping that I had done so. Also arranged to call him up on the ‘phone tomorrow at 10am re Capt Blair’s leave for 7 days rest.

Owing to the shelling of Poperinghe, Field Ambulances evacuated cases to us. Told DADMS I could take in more cases than 300 and was allowed to use my own discretion in the matter. Arranged with Capt Blair to take in another 72 cases making a total of 400. Lieut Col Chopping informed me that Capt Todd’s leave could not be granted owing to others having a prior claim outstanding since November.

Remaining in hospital at 8:30am today, total 397. No 20 ambulance train arrived and took away, lying 72, sitting 118; to Hazebrouck, lying 1, sitting 10; to No 4 Stationary Hospital 9 cases NYD shell shock; remaining 184 – wounded 80, sick 103 and 1 German prisoner.

Capt H H Hindmarsh, KOSB intelligence X Corps called and interviewed German prisoner in B1 ward this morning, censored a letter written by the German prisoner and took it away with him to post.

Colonel Gordon-Watson visited wards and had lunch. He asked me for any suggestions re circular he wished written for MO in 2^nd Army.

It seems that you are getting into the stride of reading and de-coding the material.  I think that this info is incredibly interesting for the movement of the ambulance trains.  There is a lot of general high level info on this aspect but the real detail is in the WD, and I thank you for taking the time to post your efforts. Having experienced the trials of reading WD myself, including the medical ones, I can understand the need to understand why you would want to make the effort.  

 

I already have a database of the fleet of ambulance trains in both world wars and am building a model of the Netley coaches.   Post is here

I should say that there is little consistency in recording of named patients in CCS War Diaries. 17CCS (Diary ref WO95/343) has a rich seam of detail, as colourfully indicated by Diane here, but there are sections where there are evidently changes in the personnel either maintaining or counter-signing the document (this latter would be the driving force concerning what detail he wanted in the unit Diary) and naming ceased somewhat abruptly.In this case it ceased in May 1917.

When you bear in mind that all of the CCSs had to maintain an Admissions and Discharge Register ( a small percentage of which survive to this day in series MH106 at Kew) which contained such as name,number,rank,unit,problem,outcome etc it seems an unnecessary action to duplicate that info into a War Diary as well, so we have been "lucky" to see some of it where the A&D Registers no longer exist !

I cannot thank you enough for transcribing the war diary. I came across a photo of a friend of my grandfather  who was Pte J R Scott 11058.  On the reverse it states Jack Hebblethwaite, 17 CCS, Remy Sidings, Poperinghe 1916. This gave me info to search with and I found grandad Scott and his friend in your transcription. I have grandads personal diary for 2015. It is fascinating to compare the daily reports.  Thank you again - another bit of info on my family history research.

If I have my facts right then Remy Sidings CCS later became the 10th Stationary Hospital as my father was one of the doctors based there in 1920 ( Captain Arthur H. Morris RAMC) .

It's now the site of the Lijssenthoek CWGC (with a great little visitor centre).
I'm sure they'd be pleased to see this info if they have not already done so.
