Simon_Fielding Posted 28 July , 2016 Share Posted 28 July , 2016 Just on the off chance anyone can add to this...(coughs in embarrassment) photos? One of the casualties of the fighting on the 4th was Thomas James Pryse of ‘D’ Company; either his body or his grave was destroyed: he is listed among those with no known grave on the Pozieres Memorial. Also listed on this memorial is a sergeant of ‘D’ Company, who the East Surrey’s War Diary describes as a ‘great loss’: Sgt James John Richard Thomas Giles MM was service no: 12269, and died on the 31st March 1918, aged 24. Son of the late James John Giles The Company commander ‘D’ company Captain Albert Loader Hall is also described in the War Diary as ‘wounded missing…feared mortal’ is recorded as being killed in action on the 4th April, aged 23: he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hall, of Teddington, Middx.; husband of Elsie Rosalind Hall, of 23, Atherfold Rd., Clapham, London. He is buried in Crucifix Corner Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux grave: IX. C. 4. He was, however, originally buried in a location recorded by the CWGC as ‘62d.sw.u.12.b.60.10’ which on a modern map provides a sense of the original 8/East Surrey positions.
