I bought two medals this morning in a boot sale:

Victory Medal J (James) Wilson 326877 A & S H (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) I sub to Ancestry and just can't find him on a MIC, Medal Roll or anything, although I have found him on the NA site but as I do not sub to them all I could do was just get his first name and that there is a MIC available.

The War Medal is to Thomas Wilson 4803 and 276748 7th Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and I have found information on him. He was KIA on 22/04/17.

As I bought them together I can only assume that they were brothers but as I am unable to get any thing on Ancestry.

Can you help!!!

Thanks very much for the MIC. I now see the problem he was transferred to the Cameron Highlanders and given the number 220030. He was also KIA on 28/03/18. I will try and find out if they were related.

Cheers and thanks again,

Alan

The guess I have is that he was fairly young and this chap has the immediate preceding Service Number, which might be a clue to his unit, or that they were comrades.

BAILLIE, J. Rank: Private. Service No: 326876. Date of Death: 31/03/1918.
Regiment/Service: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 11th Bn.
Grave Reference: I. D. 4. Cemetery: WANQUETIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

and this chap...

COOPER, ALEXANDER TAYLOR. Rank: Private. Service No: 326889. Date of Death: 29/10/1917. Age: 19.
Regiment/Service: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 1st/8th Bn.
Grave Reference: I. D. 1. Cemetery: ST. MARTIN CALVAIRE BRITISH CEMETERY, ST. MARTIN-SUR-COJEUL.
Additional Information: Son of John and Annie Alexander Cooper, of 7, Madeira St., Dundee.

but which Battalion????

from the MIC (cut and paste to your computer as it might soon disappear (ahem!) )

SMITH, WILLIAM. Rank: Private. Service No: 220031. Date of Death: 20/11/1917. Age: 39.
Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders 4th Bn.
Grave Reference: II. C. 1. Cemetery: LEVEL CROSSING CEMETERY, FAMPOUX.
Additional Information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Smith, of Hurlford, Ayrshire; husband of Jane Smith, of 17, Dundas St., South Side, Glasgow.

would indicate he was in the Camerons prior to November 1917, if that helps in any way....

As for Thomas, his parents didn't return the Family Verification Form, so no age or additional details for NoK or address.

WILSON, T. Rank: Private. Service No: 276748. Date of Death: 22/04/1917.
Regiment/Service: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 7th Bn.
Grave Reference: II. D. 3. Cemetery: AUBIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Thomas has papers, his parents were Thomas and Janet Morton Wilson, of 4 Strathview Gardens, Bearsden.

On his Army Form W5080, the only brother was Walter George, however this would have been completed in 1919. Also two sisters, Jane Wilson Martin and Evelyn Isabella Wilson.

James'  SDGW entry

First name(s) JAMES
Last name WILSON
Service number 220030
Rank L/CPL
Regiment Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
Battalion 6th Battalion.
Birth place KELVIN, GLASGOW, LANARKSHIRE
Residence GLASGOW
Enlistment place GLASGOW

On the 1901 census, the family are living at 501, New City Road, Glasgow, Kelvin, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

There is a James, aged 19, an architect. Thomas, aged 11, was still at school.

I found them on FindmyPast, but they should be on Ancestry.

Ancestry doesn't seem to find them with his number. Try just using his exact name, and minimal exact search terms, such as "Glasgow" or "Argyll".

I have to thank you again, I now see that they have put the wrong service number down 4808 instead of 4803 that's why I was having a problem. There is a lot of information on the papers. Thanks again I almost missed it.

Cheers,

Alan
