yellow Posted 26 July , 2016 Share Posted 26 July , 2016 A friend has asked me to help solve a decade long mystery regarding a set of postcards he purchased. All he knows is that the set of photographs was taken by a photographer with a studio in Newark. I was able to confirm that this is not a Lincolnshire memorial so I assume to be an example in Nottinghamshire. Can any helpful forum member name the location of this rather large obelisk? Thank you. seaJane Posted 26 July , 2016 Share Posted 26 July , 2016 Not Nottinghamshire, but could it be this one from the other side? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenfield,_Greater_Manchester#/media/File:The_Obelisk_on_Alderman's_Hill.jpg Google image search on obelisk memorial England. yellow Posted 26 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 26 July , 2016 Thanks you for the reply Jane. The design of the obelisk certainly looks similar, however the lay of the land, the absence of foliage and structures is of concern.

Yes - I was wondering if all that was behind the viewfinder for the modern picture. Perhaps the next step might be to find the architect for the Alderman's Hill obelisk and see what other war memorial that architect may have designed. yellow Posted 26 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 26 July , 2016 Thank you for the reply Steve. That is a great resource but sadly I could find no obvious match. Changing the subject; where is the entry for the Memorial to Albert Ball? Jane, the issue is that obelisks of this type used to be rather common. There was something very similar to where I live. For many decades it sat in council storage. It could be it is a memorial that was either demolished or removed and thus lost in memory. I did not expect anyone to ID this memorial straight away. These postcards have been in my friends collection for over ten years and have featured in a postcard magazine. No one has yet been able to ID the location. Thank you for everyone's help so far, it is very much appreciated :-)

Knotty Posted 26 July , 2016 Share Posted 26 July , 2016 Hi Yellow Hows this for a starter, its just down the road in Meridan Warwickshire, its dedicated to all Cyclists who fell in the GW, and is still standing. Your photo would have been taken from behind if it is this monument. John
yellow Posted 26 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 26 July , 2016 Thank you Steve. I was wondering why, when I used the memorial search engine nothing was resolved for it? Well done Knotty. I think we may have winner! I am very impressed! I am not sure why a Newark based photographer would be out there? All seems to fit. We had many cyclists units based on our East Coast during WW1. Great find :-)
