James Hickey killed in action before the war! I think you meant 23/8/14. Nothing obvious on FMP other than he was in the 2nd Bttn.

Hi Simon and Harry

Many thanks for your time.  Next of Kin information was very useful.  I wonder if any of the Liverpool papers reported his death?    Perhaps one of the forum members might know.   Kindest Regards DaveC

I have not come across anything for him in the Liverpool Papers. Maybe the Yorkshire Papers.

He would have been buried by the Germans as they held most of the terrain for the entire War

HICKEY, J. Rank: Private. Service No: 10657. Date of Death: 24/08/1914.
Regiment/Service: Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) 2nd Bn.
Grave Reference: II. D. 3. Cemetery: HAUTRAGE MILITARY CEMETERY.
The village of Hautrage was in German hands during almost the whole of the First World War.

The military cemetery was begun by the Germans in August and September 1914, and in the summer of 1918 they brought into it a large number of British graves of 1914, mostly of the 2nd Cavalry and 5th Infantry Divisions, from the surrounding battlefields and local cemeteries. After the Armistice 24 British graves were brought in from COUVIN, MARCHE, MARIEMBOURG and THUIN GERMAN CEMETERIES and from COLLARMONT GERMAN CEMETERY, CARNIERES.

The 2nd Bn had only landed at Le Havre on 15th August, so straight into action.

It would seem likely that James was a casualty during the fighting at Mons, falling back towards Le Cateau but dying near Hautrage, perhaps at a German Field Hospital.

Hi Kathleen and Kevin

Thank you both for your time I can't thank you enough    I'm afraid Pte James Hickey it's proving quite hard to find anything on him.    I thought there might be something on Ancestry or Find my past sites, once again thank you very much for your help.   Kindest Regards Dave
