Slaphead71 Posted 24 July , 2016 Share Posted 24 July , 2016 Is there any experts out there on the above that would happen to know if you can find out what soldiers were attached to which Coys in the 8Bn during the fighting they carried out in Delville Wood during August 1916? blairsou Posted 25 July , 2016 Share Posted 25 July , 2016 I do research at the Royal Green Jackets museum in Winchester. I am unaware of any sources of company rolls for KRRC or RB battalions. If it is possible to identify the company officers it may be possible to identify the company involved.
Slaphead71 Posted 25 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 25 July , 2016 No problem fella, I was just trying to pin point a rough area where my Great grandfather died on 24/08/1916, we know from the war diaries that 8Bn KRRC were in or around Hop Alley that day but I think that was only A & D Coy, not sure how many Coys they had? Liz in Eastbourne Posted 25 July , 2016 Share Posted 25 July , 2016 Battalions had four Companies, A-D. 8th KRRC were in 41st Brigade of the 14th (Light) Division. I am no expert on the 8th Bn KRRC but I have the KRRC Annals, which quote the War Diary for 24 August 1916 when it was the left battalion in the attack on Delville Wood. The extract says A and D Coys were involved in the attack so I assume B and C were in reserve? So your ggf was probably in A or D, but in the way of war diaries and regimental accounts of those times, only officer casualties are named. As Blairsou says, if you know any of his officers' names you would be able to find out which company he was in. Has his military record survived?
