BIFFO Posted 22 July , 2016 Share Posted 22 July , 2016 I have just finished reading Richard van Emdens excellent teenage Tommy, in it mentioned many times the much wounded major de wiert. Is he one of the two chaps who were multi wounded so much so that they bet the one who is wounded next pays for a regimental dinner, I have stood by the losers grave, in I think Vlametinge cemetery. The coffin carried by bearers who all were VC recipients If you haven’t already I can only recommend you read this book Biffo
Steven Broomfield Posted 22 July , 2016 Share Posted 22 July , 2016 I think it was SM Skinner of the Scottish Borderers. The 'Marjor de wiert' is, presumably, Carton de Wiart, who survived the war.
BIFFO Posted 22 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 22 July , 2016 Thanks for that Broomers,I know De wiert survived the amount of times wounded AND pulling two of his own fingers orf when surgeons refused to amputate I should think fritz thought him unstoppable . David Filsell Posted 23 July , 2016 Share Posted 23 July , 2016 I have also seen an otherwise unsubstantiated report claiming that he also lost a testicle in action - so to speak!
Gareth Davies Posted 23 July , 2016 Share Posted 23 July , 2016 Carton de Wiart would never have made a bet, he would have made a wager and it would have been recorded in the Wagers Book.
BIFFO Posted 23 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 23 July , 2016 VLAMERTINGE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY (it’s a bug== to find) Acting company sergeant major john skinner D.C.M VC Skinner received his VC took 14 days leave found out he was to be posted to the reserve, risking court martial he used his travel warrant to get back to his unit. He had a bet with QMS Major Victor Ross as to which of them would be wounded for the 9th time, Skinner won the bet but didn’t collect the money as he was shot between the eyes on 17th March 1918 while trying to rescue a comrade. At his funeral on March 19th 6 holders of the VC of the 29th division carried his coffin in a ceremony unique in military history as probably being the only soldier carried to his resting place on the western front upon a gun carriage drawn by a team of horses. So now we know
