liliasodell Posted 17 July , 2016 Share Posted 17 July , 2016 Can anyone point me in the direction of any records that may have been kept by the 5th Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance, in Palestine? I'm interested specifically in dates 19th-27th November 1917, and particularly 19th & 20th, when the 5thMB was near Junction Station and Latron. My grandfather was 'admitted' to the field ambulance on either 19th or 20th (probably the 19th), but he wasn't admitted to a hospital (in Giza) until the 27th which leaves a bit of a gap! And, I'd like to find out if there's any mention of him. I've checked on Ancestry, and they don't yet have any diaries for this theatre. Other hospitals and dates that followed on from this, and which I'd like to know more about are - Red Cross Hospital, Giza, 27th Nov 1917 - 23 Jan 1918 Mustapha Camp, Alexandria (the corner used for convalescents), 23 Jan 1918 - 2 Feb 1918 17th General Hospital, Alexandria, 11th May 1918 - 22 May 1918 Thank you! sotonmate Posted 17 July , 2016 Share Posted 17 July , 2016 5 Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance was a part of the Australian Mounted Division at this time. I see that in the London National Archives the 5MBFA War Diary is referenced WO95/4557 (Jan 1917 to May 1918), and was thinking that there may be something in the Australian War Memorial database too. Their diaries are free and downloadable. I took a quick look and saw the Aust. Mtd. Division's Medical Services Diary which refers to 5MBFA as being positioned at Junction Station around 20 Nov 1917. It might need a deeper look to see if there is another accessible diary.
liliasodell Posted 18 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 18 July , 2016 Thank you! I took at look at the Australian site a couple of years ago, as the WY diaries were lost at sea, and these seem to be the only ones left that might have something relevant in, but the diaries were copies of a microfiche and totally unreadable, even if you blew them up really big! I'll give it another go, see if it's been improved.. And thanks for the NA ref. I'll see if it's purchasable to download, Lilias
