jonbem Posted 16 July , 2016 Share Posted 16 July , 2016 (edited) Hi all I'm trying to find a location known as "The Pump". There are several references in diaries and books I have seen, relating to the advance of the Tyneside Irish, and other Rgts in the Arras Offensive, 9th April 1917. For example, "26th Northumberland Fusiliers coming up in support were also halted by the machine-guns in The Pump. 27th Northumberland Fusiliers moving up in turn, The Pump was eventually overcome and the survivors of the Brigade reached the Blue Line." My Great Uncle was KIA serving for the NF 27th TI, somewhere near there. I believe it was somewhere near Kleemanstellung and Gaul Weg, which I have found on trench map NW51B.NW.B.25 (http://maps.nls.uk/geo/exaplore/#zoom=15&lat=50.3282&lon=2.8125&layers=101465068 4th March 1917) and looking at other maps of the area of different dates I can't find "The Pump" noted. My great uncle Fred Ward was Originally buried B.25.b.9.9 before concentration to Orchard Dump Cemetery. Thanks in advance for any pointers Jon Edited 17 July , 2016 by jonbem amend title
sotonmate Posted 17 July , 2016 Share Posted 17 July , 2016 Try a peek at the book "Rats Alley:Trench Names" by Peter Chasseaud (ISBN:13 978-1862272767). It lists thousands of trench names and their map refs.

jonbem Posted 19 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 July , 2016 living in a small North Yorkshire town, the local library struggles with limited shelves, no Waterstones, and WH Smith isn't much of a great shake either! The internet will have to suffice for now ;-0)
