liliasodell Posted 9 July , 2016 Share Posted 9 July , 2016 Was he a son of Robert & Mary Ann Reynolds, born 1891 Derbyshire? (Is one of the trees on Ancestry yours??) Have you seen the Battalion War Diaries? There are several pages which describe in detail the actions at Mamete Wood & Bazentin Ridge on this day. Eljo ps - my maternal grandmother was an Olorenshaw There is a theory that the name originated in Derbyshire - the earliest mention found so far is from there. But no one really knows, with any certainty, either origin or meaning.
john ollerenshaw Posted 11 July , 2016 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2016 hi there nice to get a reply, yes it probably is my tree, George was born in Ripley to Robert and Mary the first of 7 and Robert was born in Crich where most of my ollerenshaw ancestors come from, there's a lot in the parish records. And I have seen the battalion war diaries, hard to read in parts. Is there a connection to your relative ollerenshaw cheers
Ellis1918 Posted 11 July , 2016 Share Posted 11 July , 2016 Try "The Tigers" by Matthew Richardson . A detailed account of 110th Brigade (6th 7th 8th &9th battn Leic Reg)in the Great War. My grandfather and his brother both served with 7th Leics from Aug 1914. Both survived. Visited Bazentin Ridge , walked from Welsh dragon through Mametz Wood over the ground they advanced across. Ellis1918 Posted 11 July , 2016 Share Posted 11 July , 2016 On your way down through France visit Berles-aus-Bois where the 7th Leics first spent time in the front line trenches. There is a plaque in the main square named after Dick Read who wrote the book "Of those we loved" about his time in the Leics.

Is there a connection to your relative ollerenshaw cheers I haven't found any ancestors with your spelling (yet), but at some point there is probably a link - surnames were spelt all sorts of different ways before being standardised. There's also quite a few in my tree that shortened the name to Renshaw. Makes looking up censuses fun! Many early emigrees to the US also adopted Renshaw. Apart from these, all my Olorenshaws have been spelt that way since the 17th century, so any link would have to be earlier. Furthest back I've got was John O. of Brewood, Staffs, c1630-1719, who married Elizabeth (surname unknown). One of his sons, Joseph (my direct acnestor) moved to Warwickshire, and nearly all his descendants lived here, or just over the Notts. border. I was very interested that there are Ollerenshaws in the Crich registers - will pass that along to our main researcher. Thank you! Lilias

Ellis1918 Posted 17 July , 2016 Share Posted 17 July , 2016 Glad you managed it. I retraced my Grandfather's route across France with the assistance of the battalion war diaries. He was awarded the DCM for his actions at Epehy in March 1918. Hope your copy of "The Tigers" arrived in time. Noticed you are a Wath lad. Worked in Wath for 10 years . The place is now unrecognisable from the days when the Manvers coking plant was spewing smoke and fumes out.
