Wondered if anyone can help me find the final resting place of James William Bellwood.  b 1896 Holbeck Leeds.  He is mentioned in the National Roll of the Great War.  Along with his father     Edgar Bellwood, He joined the West Yorkshire Regiment and served in the Cambrai sector, where he was killed in 1916.  I can find no burial records for him.  I know he was know by his middle name William, but still no luck.  HIs father survived the war, but was a poorly man after being gassed.  Thank you.

Hi Lorraine

On the CWGC there is a Lance Corporal William Bellwood of the WYR Kia 7/6/1917 commemorated on the Menin Gate.

Could that be him?

Thanks John,  I have considered all of them, but I am confused because it is stated that he was killed in 1916?.  He would have only been 20 years old.  On the National Roll of Honour it does state he was a Corporal, so it is a possibility that he is commerated on the Menin Gate.  Just no way of being emphatic.

There are only 4 men named Bellwood of WYR being listed ad died during the war. 3 died in 1917 and one , R Bellwood in 1916.

With the names you have given the L/Cpl seems to be the one. He is shown as being in 11th Bttn.

L/Cpl #15817 William Bellwood had his effects paid out to his mother, Edith.

An Edgar Bellwood married an Edith Harvey in 1895 in Hunslet - only 2 marriages of an Edgar Bellwood listed and the next isn't until 1922.

The national Roll give an address , 3 Balloon St, Holbeck. It says he volunteered in 1914. Went overseas following year . Awarded 14/15 star BWM and VM.

Thanks.  Yes I can confirm his mother was Edith and they did live in Balloon Street, Holbeck.   This does appear to finally confirm that he is the soldier on the Menin Gate.  Thanks All for your help.  I can go tell his niece who is 90years old where he is commerated.   Thanks again

The War Gratuity from the Soldiers Effects records would give 32 months qualifying service at time of death , so enlistment in Nov 14 (possibly could be pushed back to Oct 14)

Hi,. Just an update on the help and information I was given on this post.  I passed on the information about Corporal William Bellwod to his 90 year old niece.  It certainly stirred her emotions,  she did say that not only did she loose her uncle, but both her grandfather and her father were wounded and gassed.  It affected their ability to work (both bricklayers) and very often they could not earn any money to feed the families.  Both men suffered throughout their lives.  Just makes you think how really grateful we should all be.
