paulkurn Posted 7 July , 2016 Share Posted 7 July , 2016 Hi I have been asked if I can find anything about a Belgian soldier who served in 1914, all I have is his name, Maurice DEBAES, and that he survived the war. Paul
AOK4 Posted 8 July , 2016 Share Posted 8 July , 2016 You would need to know his birthdate and place of birth ideally. Files can be consulted either in the Army Museum documentation center in Brussels (born before 1888) or in Evere (born after 1888). Jan
healdav Posted 8 July , 2016 Share Posted 8 July , 2016 Survviors are a problem in any army. Those killed are carefully listed, survivors were just told to go home. I can confirm that there is no man named Debaes in the Belgian men who died database. However there is a Maurice Frederik Baes, 2nd lieutenant, who died on 2 November 1918. SteveMarsdin Posted 8 July , 2016 Share Posted 8 July , 2016 This is an excerpt from the recipients of the Belgian Fire Cross list (a medal awarded to those who came under fire in WW1): I understand that the list isn't 100% accurate but it doesn't show anyone by the exact name you state (although there is a Maurice DeBaets) Steve
AOK4 Posted 8 July , 2016 Share Posted 8 July , 2016 Steve, The list is only for those who paid to get their name in one of the books for the Fire Cross. Jan
