L/Cpl A Spencer from Retford was killed on 15.7.1916 with 1/SF.

This is the exact date when the battalion transferred from 23rd Division to the 8th Division. Where were they please on this date - 15 July 1916.

Hi

 

The War Diary says

 

14th - Orders received to move to Poulainville. Battalion marched off at 4pm arriving at 6pm. Very close billets. Orders received about 11pm to move to Longeau early next morning.

15th - Battalion marched from Poulainville at Longeau. The transport started at 6.30am and battalion at 8.30am arriving at 11.15am. Entrained at 12.45pm arrive Fouquereuil at 7.30pm. Battalion marched to billets at Labeuvriere arriving about 8.30pm.

Thank you that is most appreciated. I assume that Spencer's death was probably just one of those daily moments of the war - a stray shell or bullet or even an accident??

I presume so, there's no casualty listings in the WD. Above is all there is.

 

(A VERY long shot but have you checked medal rolls etc to see if he had been posted elsewhere [sometimes mentioned]. I do not have a subscription at the moment so cannot do so)

Served with 'C' Company, 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters he is mentioned on the Memorial Roll The Great Central Railway and shows he was with the Traffic Department based at Worksop Station. BRONNO.

The railway Roll of Honour, lists him as a Goods Guard

If I may be so bold!, what does the 1bn war diary say for the 4th March 1917 and the attack south of St Pierre Vaast Wood please?
