fellop Posted 5 July , 2016 Share Posted 5 July , 2016 A numbering query if I may. I am looking at 108543 Edward Foster Swainson 1/5th Battalion Notts and Derby Regt. 1/5th Bn was a TF Battalion, Swainson has no other number recorded, his service papers have not survived but he did. My queries / assumptions that I would like help and guidance on please are: 1 He was not a pre war member of the TF. 2 His 6 digit number 108543 was part of the TF numbering under Para 146a TF Regulations [AO 228 of 1915] 3 Because of 2 above he did not renumber as part of the TF re-numbering on 1 March 1917 when the 1/5th Bn Notts and Derby number block was 200,001 – 240,000. butler Posted 19 July , 2016 Share Posted 19 July , 2016 I have not researched Notts and Derby Regiment numbers but think you will find that 108543 is a Regular service number issued late in the war when it was no longer possible to directly enlist as a Territorial. Due to its size the regiment issued regular service numbers into 6 figures. This number is nothing to do with the renumbering of Territorial Force battalions in 1917 which you rightly state began with 200001.
